He woke.
Everything was dark. Why couldn’t he see? He blinked, but that did nothing to dispel the darkness surrounding him. He tried to turn his head, but that, too, was impossible. Panic coursed through his veins, causing his breathing to become shallow, which only made the issue worse. Wherever he was, there wasn’t much air, and his fear was causing him to waste it.
Gritting his teeth, he forced himself to calm, feeling his heartbeat slow. That was better. Slowly he began to test his body, seeing which limbs had room to move. Although his head seemed to be stuck, his shoulders and front paws were slightly maneuverable. The pads of his paws brushed against something loose and soft. He recognized the texture.
Dirt. He was buried alive.
A soft growl escaped his throat. He didn’t know how he had come to be here, or why, but he had to escape. He scrabbled at the dirt until he was able to free his head, snarling as dirt fell into his eyes. Using his claws to gain leverage, he gouged at the earth, hoping he was heading towards the surface and not just burying himself further.
After what felt like hours of digging, he was becoming lethargic. He didn’t know how much longer he could continue on. Then something ruffled the fur of his mane. He froze, unsure if he was imagining the sensation, but then it happened again. A wave of energy flooded through him and he redoubled his efforts to reach the surface. His lungs heaved for fresh air.
A thin, watery light made him squint, unable to see after having been under the dark ground for so long. With the last of his energy, he hauled himself from the earth, the last of his energy vanishing. As his vision faded, he saw a figure in the distance running towards him.
-
He woke.
Without opening his eyes, he cataloged his surroundings. There was no longer the wet, musty smell of dirt, but instead the scent of herbs and smoke. Once he had determined that there was no immediate danger, he opened his eyes.
He appeared to be in some sort of tent made from animal hide. Piles of herbs, both fresh and dried, lay against the opposite wall. Adjacent was an opening in the tent, through which a human was entering. Surprisingly, he didn’t feel any fear or anger in the creature’s presence, only a sort of calm acceptance.
“Ah, you’re awake.” He was startled to find that he could understand the human’s speech. “No, don’t get up. You’ve been through quite an ordeal.” He huffed; that was an understatement. Baring its teeth - in a flood of insight, he knew that this was what humans called a smile - the human knelt next to him and placed its hand on his mane. “You were dead, you know. I buried you myself. It is a mystery, how you are alive now, but who am I to question the gods, eh?”
Dead. He tried to remember anything before waking up under the earth, but couldn’t. There was only a blank spot where his memories had once been. The human smiled at him again, perhaps knowing his thoughts. “I suppose that even in death, there is hope for new life. This is a great gift you have been given, my friend. I hope you use it wisely.”
-
Several months later, he was once again hale and hearty, recovered from the wounds he had given himself while digging free of his grave. As he gazed one last time upon the human’s hut, he was saddened to realize that he would miss the creature who had nursed him back to health. Perhaps, once he had passed into the afterlife for good, they would meet again.
Turning his back, Even in Death strode off into the savannah, intending to make the most of his second chance at life.

Give me a reason to believe that you're gone
I see your shadow so I know they're all wrong
Moonlight on the soft, brown earth
It leads me to where you lay
They took you away from me
But now I'm taking you home
I will stay forever here with you, my love
The softly spoken words you gave me
Even in death, our love goes on
Some say I'm crazy for my love, oh, my love
But no bonds can hold me from your side, oh, my love
They don't know you can't leave me
They don't hear you singing to me
I will stay forever here with you, my love
The softly spoken words you gave me
Even in death, our love goes on
And I can't love you any more than I do
I will stay forever here with you, my love
The softly spoken words you gave me
Even in death, our love goes on
And I can't love you any more than I do
