You pad along cautiously, the unsettling silence of what you know should be a lively jungle sending a chill down your spine and raising screaming alerts into your mind. Dodging a puddle, you sent the humid air around you, trying to find a smell other than the heavy one of death. It seems as if that scent just clings to the jungle, something that fits right along all the horror stories you heard about the pride that lives here. Not that you believe them, after all there is no way a pride can truly be so cruel right?
Giggling to your right makes you stop in your tracks, you eye the bush where the sound is still coming from warily, only to blink a little confused at the animal that appears. It's a small fox, with red fur and brown legs, you can see that the front left one is a lighter brown than the others. The fox looks at you and you notice the different colors; its left eye is red while the right one is blue. It's then that you realize that the fox is also grinning, a large mocking grin that makes its face look entirely too malicious for its size.
"Oh? Hello there! Decided to visit our humble abode?" The question is obviously rhetoric (Why else would you brave the thick 'death trap' as it was often called?), even so, with no other answer you nod slowly. The fox's grin seems to stretch even more on his face, and his eyes lit up with a dark glint. You feel your instincts screaming at you to leave, and you consider obeying. Perhaps walking into here and ignoring all the warnings wasn't such a good idea after all? But before you can retreat branches breaking around you herald the arrival of a group of lionesses, all of them looking vicious and covered in blood. You hope the blood is from the Okapi carcass one of them is dragging. The leader of the party looks at you for all of 5 seconds before her ear flicks in dismissal, you would feel offended if you weren't worried about the other circling lionesses.
"Greetings, Seer Aries. Wandering the lands again?" The surprisingly deep voice of the lioness brings back your attention to the fox. 'Seer Aries?' You wonder if it is just a title or the animal truly is a seer.
"Good morning, Eydis. And you know me, can't stay put in one place when there is so much going on. For example, I just found this new guest!" You can feel the olive eyes of the female bore into your face.
"You're taking them to our majesty, I take it?" The fox snickers softly and then nods, for some reason looking too excited about something.
"I am indeed! I do believe we will be just in time for lunch too!" At this all the lionesses surrounding you snicker; you can't help but feel there is something you're missing.
After walking deeper into the jungle with the fox doubling as a tour guide ("Oh yes, this tree was hit by a great shard of meteorite shards, we believe it was Apemadek's blessing to our pride!" Here you couldn't help but ask why if it was such a blessing the tree seemed to burn. "It's how we honor Apollyon! The fire was blessed to always burn!" The confusion must have showed your face because the fox giggled again. "If you truly want to know, our rightful kings know better than to side with anyone during a war, better to keep the favor of both parties so you always get away unharmed from the conflict!") And the lionesses keeping guard, you started to hear noise. A startling contrast to the silent jungle from some minutes ago.
Walking into the clearing you became extremely aware of all the eyes watching you, no conversation truly stopped but you knew that every lion within the clearing was paying attention to you.
Aries leads you to a cave entrance, similar to the other ones spread around the cleaning but with the marked difference that this one has various lion skulls stuck between the entrance rocks. This coupled with the moss and what you're pretty sure are blood marks gave the opening a ominous air.
"Hel! Come out! I have found a guest wandering our lands!" Aries sudden yell echoed inside the cave, from the sound it seemed as if it was deep.
A gravelly soft voice answered from behind you. "You saw me when you entered, you knew I wasn't there. Now why don't you stop playing around and introduce me to our... guest"
Having whirled around at the new presence you couldn't help but blink in confusion at the image the lion presented. Despite the fact that he was clearly an adolescent, and as such smaller than a full-grown king, his sheer presence made you pause. You didn't know if it was the huge horns, the obvious blood splatter or the gold tipped claws but something told you, he would not be an easy opponent to fight.
"Ah yes! Well this is..." Introductions done, the now named Helios ("Technically speaking it’s High King Helios the Astral, but that’s just a mouthful") you were invited to stay for lunch, not wanting to seem rude you accepted even though the many lions around made you feel uncomfortable.
You watched how Helios laid down in a higher rock than everyone else and was instantly swarmed by two cubs you recognized as a Two-heads and a Sirenomelia cub, rather than scolding them, Helios grabbed them within his paws and proceeded to snuggle them, carefully and lovingly cleaning them. He stopped when a orange pelted fluffy lioness, let loose a roar. As if on cue different lionesses stepped forwards to grab a meal from the food pile to the side of the clearing, two lionesses brought some for you and you saw another two lionesses doing the same to Helios and the cubs. Soon after, the king took the first bite, the signal everyone else was allowed to start too.
While chewing into the zebra carcass you couldn't help but notice that there were some lionesses and even cubs with nothing to eat. Before you could ask what it was about, the same lioness that roared pushed a rotting elephant calf carcass to the middle of the cleaning, and grinning spoke one word. "Begin!".
You observed with growing horror how the group of cubs started to fight viciously for the meat, they were clawing and biting, trying to kill each other in the quickest ways and when that failed... they went for the most gruesome ones. After a while you understood why, once 10 cubs were left lionesses killed 5 of them, the ones that hadn't had numerous kills, and then the ones that hadn't had bloody kills, until only 3 cubs were left. These 3 cubs pounced onto the rotting meat once they were given permission, eating desperately as if the meat was going to be taken from them... and you didn't know if that actually was a real concern or not. And that's when you heard it, the loud laughter of the pride. For them this was a game, nothing more than entertainment. You watched how Helios and the two cubs mocked the remaining 3, criticizing their "killing technique" and commenting that they expected better or they would show them how it was done...
It seems after all, that the stories of the pride that lived within the jungle were actually downplayed.
