Hello! I was just/am having an interesting conversation about the LioDen art market, and the various views on such, so I was wondering, what is everyone else's opinions?

Personally, I think the art market is in very poor condition, most artists working for the 1 USD/hour equivalent, give or take, however, what amount of effort put into art do you think is equivalent to the amount put into game currencies? Since LD is a form of entertainment, while art can be considered a legitimate job I favor the artist's benefit, though, it is very possible that I am biased due to the fact that I too consider myself an artist, and have undervalued my own work to the extremes on many occasions.

So, anyway, I'm really curious about everyone's opinions!

Art in general is very undervalued in our economies. And how most people have seen it, even for famous painters in the past, their art wasn't even worth much until after their death.

We always say how much art is cherished, but is it really cherished as much as we say? That's how I think of it. Because most think it's pretty and all, but not worth their time/money.

I think most artists on here receive good pay for their art. Recolors aren't going to cost as much, and custom pieces will definitely cost more, but it also depends on the artist. We all have different levels and styles of art. So how much others may see it, others may think it's worth more or less.

I don't know, I'm sure there's plenty of different views on this subject, though xD

Seria-
I feel that in a more universal perspective and a professional atmosphere art is usually priced fairly well.
Through virtual currencies, however, I see no such fairness of price, and, honestly, of all SIM sites I've been on, art is priced lowest here on LD. (I blame Xylax, because well, who needs art here, we have Xylax making us all these pretties. to look at. x3)
And, frankly, I've worked for fractions of pennies/hour with art on SIM sites before(and was told so, many a time, but at my skill level didn't mind my own undervaluement), so I don't find it pleasant when artists like this get paid an estimate .50 per hour, at their level of skill.

I blame the community on why art is under valued. People piss and moan when art is priced at GB (or very high SB prices when converted to GB). They complain its to high and unfair for everyone. Which in my opinion is very pathetic. If people can not pay for the art just simply don't say anything. Also what bugs me the most is when an artists is asking for help on how to price their art. Their is always some one that just superbly low balls the art. It makes me cringe oh so much

I think it depends on artist and buyer. I myself actually on lioden charge allot less then I will be charging for money commissions at conventions. I think it's because the actual commission rate charge of gb to real currency would be quiet a pricey number of Gb people would rather spend on lions then character art. 2 gb is a dollar after all. So instead of an hourly charge they do a set fee price to ensure they actually accumulate business. Since my style of art and current skill set most people currently charge roughly 10 - 15 dollars for a print at cons. Commissions are roughly 15-20 dollars since they are a print set. chibi style is usually 5-10 dollars (at least from what I have seen. I have only really bought art at anime cons so prices very well do different via person and location)

I guess it also depends on people, though's who are more into the site for the sims aspect would spend gb they earn through money and saving and scraping Sb would rather spend it on lions they can breed for better marks and profit. Though there are the occasional people (like my friend) who will splurge on nothing but art.

Even on my art thread I was told I may have to lower my prices because even while my art work is talented enough for the asking amount just to get business. It's tough being an artist on virtual sites at times :/

Furr- I wont disagree in the least, but it's the artists selling as well for allowing themselves to sell so low! I get it when people genuinely don't know what to price their art at, but as the sellers artists have the option to be fair to themselves, or not sell at all.
And oh, yes, I know what you mean, I've been told before that a considerably large/detailed pixel piece(the top on on my account was the example, actually) was worth 50 SB.

@CopCat, *Facepalms* that could at least go for a few GB. How much did you pay for it? Also yea I can agree with the fact that some artists are to blame for lowering their prices to users expectations.

@Allen, nuu don't listen to those people.

Allen- Furry is right! Don't listen to a word of it! I understand that art can seem pricey in Gb form, but it's a luxury, and even if not following the realistic wages, it should at least be sold at the amount of USD of GB(IE a $12 piece for 12 GB), however I've yet to see even these kind of prices.

Furr- Oh, I didn't pay for it, I drew it of my original male wayyy back.

"but it's the artists selling as well for allowing themselves to sell so low!"

^ this though. I agree with that so much. Artists have a choice to price at whatever they want. Yes, the community doesn't appreciate art but people choose to price low. :I

I charge half of what I would half normally. Except for full-bodies as people will flip their boats at 20GB (which is why I stopped doing them). I still sell my art for decent prices on LD every so often (decent for LD). It depends on who sees your art as well. :I I've had almost all my YCH auctions auto'ed after a few days of being up because the right person came by.

And I priced based on how much I thought it was worth. Not because someone told me. uwu They were still cheap because I need a buttload of practice but I decided and that's the point xD

As for buying, I spend a maximum of 5-ish GB because I've had six people run out on me after taking my money. And they did return to LD so screw that. 5GB isn't much to lose but 30-40GB is. e.e

If the artist is happy with that then I won't complain. If the artist wants more then I probably won't order. If I'm offering or giving advice then I go with comparable prices. >w>

I usually for my art (because I'm so forgetful) I ask them to keep their currency until the art has been fully made. For me it's much easier to delete a piece of art posted then to accidentally forget about a commission already pre-paid for because I am a very forgetful person at time because life has been busy lately.

Also you are right, I charge about 5 gb for chibi and my anime human art (A very very quick ten minute or under example is in my den but it's really not that good) is often allot more because I take a long time and detail into the 5 sketch outlines I do to make sure it looks right, outline, and then color. I practically draw the same piece six times to get it right >.>;; But even though my art work for that is good, I have only gotten 1 commission for my anime art because of the price even though to me my anime art is my pride and joy because I love drawing it. (Chibi's are quicker and less detailed to do and I actually don't enjoy drawing them as much anymore)

Jack + Furry- Well that's the thing about the art market, the buyers wont pay more because of fear of not getting the art they paid for, however due to the low prices people aren't inspired to finish the work. It cycles and keeps everything where it is.

@Furry, I think I still have their details on my art document. xD I record everything because I like being organized. :I

@Allen, I'm the same. I prefer it if people don't prepay (though some insist, lol). Usually I do half now and half later as it works best. Buyers won't lose everything and I wouldn't have worked for nothing.

@CopyCatClown, not sure about that. o.o I'm doing a $150 pencil commission right now and I have no motivation to do it.. xD

For trust.. if I can get that person's email then I'm willing to pay a lot more but if they're exclusive to LD and won't share any detail of where to find them then there's no way because I can't hunt you down after 2 months. The people who walked out on me had already done quite a few LD commissions so I thought it'd be fine but turns out I have terrible luck. .-.
