With two people having brought up the idea of inbreeding/lioness age causing mutations again, this got me to wondering: what happened to undesirable mutations?

As I seem to remember it, mutations were originally proposed as one of the cub population control methods. Birth defects would cause cubs to die before their time, much as would happen in the wild. Of course, we have a taste of this with the lethal mutations, but especially with the often adorable art and ability to freeze cubs... they've become desirable more than anything.

I'm talking more about mutations that wouldn't have any special art (or if they did, it would be a very minor change, maybe an overlay).

Mutations like deafness, toothlessness and clawlessness don't necessarily have to be lethal, but they could shorten the lion's life and curtail hunting, heiring and broodmothering. More importantly, if tied to inbreeding or the age of the mother, they could constrain or limit breeding and add depth to the game. What suggestions do you have?

This suggestion has 421 supports and 37 NO supports.

So you take a risk every time you make a "morally incorrect decision" (although I'm pretty sure in the wild lions occasionally inbreed and resort to cannibalism)? I like it :D!

I feel like deafness would be a good addition. No special features, and would probably disable hunting / patrolling / heiring / broodmothering. I can't imagine it'd have much popularity. Only downside to this is that it may hinder GMO'd litters. Imagine you rollover, check out your litter. . . and bam. One, deaf cub. How disappointing.

Maybe these mutations could be classified differently as "birth defects" or something, and not be affected by GMO Cow etc.

I could recognize that. I'd love for birth defects to be much more common than mutations as well. I'm just not sure how 'undesired' they'll be as it's still a way to make lions be special snowflakes.

Heh. Maybe lions with allergies to chasteberry / tackweed or something? Perhaps they can't use fertility items. I don't think that'd make anyone throw their money, since it wouldn't get a special lineart / appearance. {I just came up with this entirely on the fly, thought it might be cute, aaaah.}

Lion allergies? That's interesting, they should implement that too :).

This is a really good idea, I like it! Like mentioned before, it can add more depth into the game

This is an amazing idea. Mutations that are undesirable would maybe help the community stop trying to farm muties, or lower the amount of "desirable" mutations circulating, making "good" mutations much more rare, as they should be. These days it seems everyone has a mutie or two in their pride, and it doesn't really make sense. I thought they were supposed to be rare. Now, items like GMO cows and lion meats are partially to blame, but so are the unbalanced odds of desirable to undesirable mutations. As stated above, pretty much every mutation, lethal or not, is treated like a jewel. Now, there's nothing wrong with cherishing a dwarf, or a conjoined cub that passed, but honestly mutations are loosing their spark. They're so common, I don't jump to see a foldie auction or a mane shaggy raffle anymore.

This addition would help a lot, as someone may just get a lion/lioness with no special lineart, but instead a mutation that doesn't show. Just a normal lion/lioness that can't to things that a normal lion would be able to do, like a little burden. This would especially suck if you got one from using an expensive item, like a GMO cow or something.

Anyways, sorry for the rant, and if any of my views seem uneducated, that's because they kind of are. I stopped playing Lioden when muties were still a rare treasure, when leopons didn't exist and when everyone would stalk the first dwarf cub that had been born, and after getting back into it, I was very disappointed that mutations weren't even that uncommon anymore. Support!

...Also I think lion allergies would be an awesome addition, as well..

Terrible idea!

I've worked very hard to keep my bloodlines pure. I started with just two lions and my entire pride is from those two lions.

No support.

I asked if inbreeding could lead to mutations sometime during my second week of playing, I think. I wanted to have a an ancestry of male lions leading to my first ever -perhaps influenced by TLK-, but then out of curiosity began to watch dozens of documentaries about lions and african wildlife in general and took note of my error. I believe that this idea, along with an added difficulty in hunting for "normal" lionesses paired with age past 10 or so years, would be interesting.

What about terminal illnesses? Things like feline leukemia. I'm not sure if this is something that takes place in big cats, but I know for certain that domesticated cats suffer from this disease as one of my old females happened to be a carrier of it, having several of her kittens die.

There wouldn't be any needed special art, the cubs would look and act perfectly normal as if nothing were wrong, until one day they stopped. Cats with feline leukemia tend to act perfectly normal for several months, until one day they just curl up and die. I've seen kittens take fits almost like seizures before that happens as well, which brings me to another idea.

Epilepsy. Another disease that domestic cats can suffer from, so I'm sure lions could too. If left untreated, epilepsy can kill cats of any age. Since lions are wild animals and can't be treated for it, the rate at which epilepsy could kill lions would be much higher. This could work similarly to the cub accidents we already have, having a cub that occasionally takes a seizure upon rollover, which would lower their survival chance bar even if they were under a broodmother's protection. Playing with this cub/using a hornbill shouldn't be able to increase the survival bar in epileptic lions, leaving a higher chance for them to die.

Sorry, but no support. This would ruin bloodlines and mutie breeding, which is a big part of Lioden.

People who said no support: outside of the mutations/inbreeding relationship, would you support having these "undesirable mutations"?

Support. Love muties but I agree they've become more of a breeding frenzy than a population control.
I would hate to see any of my lions get hurt and/or get killed, die early or get an undesirable mutation but it'd add more depth to the game and more population control factors to keep market more open for better lions. It would suck for me and everyone else but it would make the game more fun for me in the long run, anyways. Give more strategy?
