Eh. What can I say, I like humans. Poachers? I dunno, going out and fighting lions sounds pretty awesome. Even when I battle them myself, (The poachers, not lions, though that would be cool) I imagine an awesome battle of wits and strength.

The lion that stalked us for two hours finally came out, roaring in anger. I brought up my gun; I was trained for this. I needed to provide for a family back home, a wife and a baby. No damn lion was gonna get me and my friends.

I shot three times, hearing the guns of my friends' shoot as well. However, our old and battered rifles were known for being a little too cockeyed. At first, I thought the animal would turn back. he couldn't fight so many guns, he was already hurt.

Then I heard the roar of the lion's pride. Damn, we were... I couldn't think it.
"Juan! Keep working on the truck, I don't wanna die!" I screamed to the African, who was busy messing with the wires in the driver's seat.
"I-I'm trying, just give me a second!" He replied. I could hear the panic in his voice.

But I knew it was too late. The entire pride was upon us now. They came running, the pounding of their paws shaking the ground. God, I didn't wanna die.

It was a blur. I felt myself being thrown, then crushed, then lifted for only a moment before I felt something on my neck.

I remembered the night before, my crew talking about their families back home over black coffee, surrounding a small fire.
I remembered my little baby girl, seeing her scream and holler with her little friends as they played in the mud. I remembered my wife's face; her beautiful face. I remembered my father, mother, brother. I remembered seeing my dog, Rudd, lying in my lap as he slowly passed away.

At least I can see my dog again, after all these years.

But who cares? Ugh, those terrible humans!

Are you trying to make people feel bad for poachers?

Going out and fighting lions might sound 'awesome', but what are you going to do when there are no lions left to go out and fight?

Those poachers that you described remembering their families while lions descended upon them? They wouldn't need to remember their families if they just stayed with them.
Poachers don't go out and poach/kill animals because they have to, they do it for greed, by their own choice. They kill innocent animals to take their bones, or their ivory tusks so they can sell them on the black market for money.

They slice up animals while they're still alive and leave them so suffer in pain and eventually die alone, and do you know what? 90% of the time, the sick people enjoy it.
The point of this event isn't to say that animals are superior and humans are nasty old creatures, it's to raise awareness about poaching, the harms it can cause to the world and its wildlife and why it needs to be stopped.

And besides all that, there's one really important thing you need to remember.

Lioden is just a GAME.

I don't know man, as a human myself, I'd feel a slight amount of sympathy for anyone who was getting mauled to death or gored by lion, even if they deserved it, because it's a hard way to die. Mind you, "slight", very slight. However, because this is a game, and I am a lion in the game and the point is to fend off the poachers this month, that's pretty much what you do when you go out into explore. You could always turn off the event though if you don't want to see the violence :). Personally, for me though, I kill for the money (kind of like a reverse poacher, at least this is just a game). Even if it's saving another animal, I usually just go for the option that gives me the most money. Don't worry though, I'm not this greedy or malicious in real life XD.

Why would you even try to sympathize with poachers? Poachers don't just go fight lions to save their own lives. They kill animals for fun. For sport. They don't even eat their meat- they torment and kill them for no reason at all.

Lions don't go up and attack humans. They try to avoid them.. unless the human is the one attacking them.

There's something seriously wrong with you if you condone the pointless, cruel slaughter of animals for fun.

How would you like it if someone just came up and killed you for a trophy?

Fighting a lion bare hands may be "cool" and "awesome in some point of view", but just firing from far away with a gun that instantly kills the lions is not a challenge at all.
Also, yes, if you were in the Savannah for any good reason and a lion attacked you, you would have to kill it to save your own life, to, like you said, see your family again. But going in the savannah in the only aim to kill a lion? No, you do not kill it to see your wife again, you kill it because you are greedy and does not care for nature and biodiversity at all. Feeling bad for poachers would be like feeling bad for terrorists that are killed by police and then will not see their family again.

I honestly think I'd be cool to mention that poverty and poaching are somewhat linked.

I also think it's pretty rad to mention that poaching is a pretty complex subject due to the fact corruption is pretty rampant in Africa (i.e, the dictators that have been in power since the 90s) poor people poaching animals to make sure their families don't go hungry at night, uncertainty on how to properly punish poachers, etc.

It's just more than a black and white issue.

.. But have you seen the elephant with its face torn off?

When there are laws against killing an animal, it's typically to ensure that animal is still around in a few years. And to kill that animal anyways is sort of really bad..? Not only because it's against the law but because you may be wiping out a whole species. :c

In your story ( well written I might add ) the man seems as though he has to kill the lion for money, as if it is his job and is the only job he can get. That's probably not the case, most of the time. cx

Edit;; perhaps even if it were, I feel as though cutting a living creature's face off and leaving it to die is perhaps not the best way to go about earning a quick buck! Just my thoughts. <3

I have no sympathy what so ever for any poacher or animal abuser. They get what they deserve. If they have a right to kill animals for money, which is evil, then the animals have right to kill people for food or defense...which is totally natural.

You seem to be mistaking "hunter" and "poacher" - they are two very different things. Hunters are the ones hunting for survival - they can hunt legally if they simply apply for a permit and dont hunt more than they are allowed to. There are even government orders for man-eaters, agressive specimen and etc, which pay well, enough to fend for a family - but not enough to buy expensive cars and take girlfriends to fashionable clubs. Poachers are the ones who hunt for wealth, who take down way more than they need to survive and damage the ecosystem. A hunter who is taking down one lion to feed his family, is not a poacher. A poacher is the one killing hundreds of animals for way more money than he needs, so he can buy useless stuff like jewelry for his girlfriend.

A poacher is just one of the forms of pure evil...dont see animals going around killing to bring home prizes for their families...they just try to survive...

While they are "humans" and have families, they aren't doing any good to the world, just ridding of animals that we need and getting items for their own pleasure. You don't see animals wearings a human skin around their neck do you?

Poaching is terrible, and it really seems like you're condoning poaching because "they have families"

Poachers are violent people, dangerous people. I spent some time out in South Africa a few years ago with rangers at Kruger, we spotted poachers in the park, intended to drive them out. But you know what they did? They turned on us, came at as with machetes. It's a different kettle of fish when you're the target and not some poor rhino, elephant, leopard, lion or whatever.
