The gray and rose mare pawed the soft soil that gradually blended into the grass of the Mare's back. She was scouting, though her people were not at war. Her primary targer were stray pards who were eager to catch the young foals that had just dropped. Secondly, she was searching for an envoy of gryphons that were due any day now. With one eye to the sky and the other to the rolling Plains, Maukin did not have time for stray thought. She didn't notice the hours passing until a dark blue stallion with a gray mane and tail came to alleviate her. Mau nodded her thanks and eagerly trotted off. Now the young mare was searching for her companion, Lai. Though Mau had other friends in the herd, she found she had grown very close with Lai So close, in fact, that the gray mare hardly recogonized she was developing feeling she couldn't really describe for her. She knew that Lai was different from the other members of the herd, not only in appearance. Though at first Lai had been timid and shy, she had warmed up quickly to Mau and the two became fast shoulder friends.

As Maukin crested the rise that led down to the common grazing area of her people, she immediately distinguished Lai's dark brown and white coloring. It was very odd for a unicorn to have such, but seeing how the mare was born a daya, she bore a rich brown coat. Mau was just about to whistle a greeting to her friend when suddenly a familiar call came from behind her. The gray and rose mare turned to see her sister, Pae trotting towards her with delighted eyes. Her sister bore the same shade of gray as Mau but no white markings. Instead she had a brilliant blue mane and tail as well as a blue socks and stripes running along her legs. She also adorned blue rings around her eyes which Mau never failed to find adorable. The young warrior tossed her head and trotted forth to meet her younger sister. "Mau!" The gray and blue mare cried as they greeted one another with a soft nuzzling. "How was your scout?"

"It was fine, Pae, but I have arrangements with a friend. I'll be able to catch up with you tonight when we see Shad and Khali." Mau quickly withdrew and turned to head down the hill towards her friend.

"You're going to see the daya over me?" The gray mare turned to see her disappointed sister, and noticed that her gaze was fixed on the brown and white mare below. "I didn't want to be the one to tell you this, Mau, but others are finding it rather odd how close the two of you are."

Mau snorted in surprise and lashed her tail. "Jeaous, you mean, as to how close of shoulder-friends we are." The gray and rose mare grew incredibly defensive as her heart quickened. Deep down she felt something sure, but was unable to name or acknowledge it at the moment. "And she is not a da anymore, Pae, she is a unicorn like you and me." Mau did not wait for her younger sisters reply before cantering down the rest of the slope to her friend.

Mau scoffed as she approached and heard her friend's question. "Nothing important, Laika, just a jealous little sister is all." The grey and rose mare brushed up against the bay and white mare and nuzzled the side of her neck. Just the touch of Lai's fur made Mau's heart quicken. Her flesh grew hot and the warrior moved away suddenly, having grown a little flustered. "So what did you do today? Anything of interest?" Mau glanced around and noticed that the other unicorns had been grazing and chatting in groups, but she had found Laika alone. She switched her tail irritably. It irked her on the deepest level to know her dear shoulder-friend struggled with the others.

Glancing up back towards the hill, she noticed her sister's disapproving look before the filly trotted down the hill to join her own group of friends. They were all to be made warriors soon, though Mau thought bitterly that Pae certainly didn't act like a warrior yet.
