----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mbita's youth was perhaps not the most favourable. When he was born, his father, Umoja, already picked his heir, and thus chose to make the young cub believe he was adopted and not his own son to avoid any conflict. Umoja died when Mbita was only four months old - when he was weaned, he would be sent to Maatjik, Umoja's brother and ally of the pride.

Khamisi, Umoja's successor, didn't feel that hiding the truth would be fair to the young Mbita, and announced to him he was indeed Umoja's son, but with Khamisi's ascension to the throne, no longer a heir. Mbita didn't take it badly, but instead felt more enstranged from the deceased Umoja. However, he would come to spend the next seven months in Maatjik's pride, who had transformed from a kind and patient king to an evil, unscrupulous ruler after his brother's death. The evil lion killed unworthy cubs and lionesses, but didn't put a paw on Mbita out of respect for his deceased brother.

In the seven months after his departure from his pride, Mbita transformed into an unruly teenager. He liked to explore the endless plains in the land, which was only fueled by the lacking acceptance of him from the other lionesses, and Khamisi was convinced to let him return after Maatjik's complaints. This time though, Mbita wanted to make the trip himself, when he was old enough to do so. He avoided Maatjik as much as he could and only spoke with a select group of lionesses.
Despite his isolation, Mbita became close friends with Akua, who would go to Khamisi's pride to be sired by him, and Mbita chose to extend his stay until Akua would be ready to leave. The lands slowly began to die out under Maatjik's paw, leading to a plan forming in Akua's head, a plan that would involve Mbita. The adoloscent lion grew more mature when his 12-moon celebration came along, and a month later, he and Akua returned to Khamisi's lands at night.

The two were warmly welcomed into the pride, Mbita immediately showered in loving kisses from his mother, Nyota. Akua took both him and Khamisi away from the pride, and announced her plan: raise Mbita to be strong and king-worthy and have him overthrow Maatjik.
Both Mbita and Khamisi immediately objected to the plan, while Akua kept pressing on: the young lion was allowed to stay by his father, which meant he was the true heir, and this would be his inheritage. Mbita rudely rejected, and left. Khamisi defused the situation, stating it's too close to the old stories, and eventually a different male would come along to take over Maatjik's throne, and it didn't have to be Mbita.

Mbita spent the months after in isolation. Although he was in his homeland, he never grew up very long with the lionesses, and felt out of place. The pregnancy of Akua made it worse, and Mbita would more often be found at the borders than with the pride. He encountered another teenager who he had met before as a cub: Simba, a youngster with a fiery mane, an adopted son of a pair ruling a pride of outcast mutants. The two became close friends, giving Mbita something to look forward to during the day, despite warnings from his pride that Simba was not to be trusted.
One day however, Simba took Mbita to the lands where he lived, a dry gorge with minimal trees. They became surrounded by Simba's pride, however, who attacked Mbita: they believed he was heir to Umoja, and by kiling him, they would get one step closer by ruling over the land they owned. Simba tried to save his friend, but was shut out - Mbita fortunately could escape and climbed the gorge. Simba was casted out by his former pride and lurked on the border while Mbita, badly injured, was saved by a rogue lion named Tendaji.

Mbita was able to recover, but was filled with resentment towards Simba and his pride. When his former friend came to the land to ask for sanctuary, he was banished by Khamisi for betrayal against the pride. Mbita saw his former friend leave, never to return.

The months after were dreadful. Mbita's body was scarred permanently, and he was now constantly followed by an escort, usually Mshindi. The lack of privacy made the young lion frustrated, until he saw a lion, pure white with pink eyes, near the waterhole. He and his son were invited - the older lion requested that his son, Mpweke, would be allowed to stay in Khamisi's pride. They were mutants, Achromias, making them completely white with no pigment on their body. Khamisi had a reasonable distrust against mutants and would almost decline the request, until the young cub with the strange aura, Mwonaji, said Mpweke would bring good fortune. The tiny one was only just able to speak, but seemed very certain of her claim, and Khamisi let him stay.

Mpweke and Mbita became close, close friends, often hanging around each other. The bond between the two lead to Khamisi removing Mbita's escort, but keeps a close eye on the mutant, still.
