In a once thriving, now barren from fires, lives a pride, ruled by a cruel, violent lioness with no respect for anything but herself named Desierta. She'd do anything to protect her pride, anything.
Born from a very successful and kind, but sassy hunter named Mmea, and an absent man-eater with intense eyes, she was made for hunting down anything that can run. Her prey-drive was evident even as a cub. Sure, all cubs played with anything that was particularly active and caught their eyes, but Desierta had a different… way of it. More… cruel. Mmea was proud of her hunting aptitude, but the rest of her pride… not so much. It was obvious just how much of a perfect mix of her parents she was as she started growing, even getting a scar in the same placement on her mouth as her mother on a leopard hunt that went sideways.
But… being such a good mixture came with issues, considering her father’s disposition. Being the daughter of a man-eater and becoming more and more interested in hunting things down and killing them for fun rather than hunger and admiring each skeleton left by her kills, she was ostracized out of fear of her killing someone in the pride. She was only allowed into the pride because Mmea was important to the pride, and threatened to leave if they exiled Desierta. But… Mmea was already a month away from fourteen by the time Desierta was born. And the second her mother passed, she was abandoned.
For years, she was alone, her hurt feelings, worries over never being good enough just because her father was a man-eater, her concerns over never being able to fit in... all bred her into a narcissistic, man-eating beast. If they were going to treat her like a monster, she'd become one.
Her first human kill was to serve as intimidation. She wanted to be a part of her birth pride again, and she was going to be, no matter what it took to be included. She deserved that, she deserved to have family again. So, when Ulvarra, the Queen that reigned when Desierta was a cub, passed, Desierta killed a poor man that ventured too far from his home, gnawed on his body for days until it was a bare skeleton, before carrying the skull to her birth pride as a trophy and proudly showed it off to everyone, who weren't... as proud and excited over the skull. A few lionesses she grew up with as aunts tried to chase her off, but Desierta wasn't the type of lioness that could just be scared off anymore. By the end of the night, she had six new trophies, and blood dirtied her fur.
Her next few human kills were to scare the remaining lions into serving her.
And the rest.... Those were just out of pure enjoyment. The stalking... the thrill of the chase... the fear on those poor human's eyes... the screams... the blood... it invoked some type of intense prey-drive, a need to kill. The leftover trophies were fun, too. The only thing she disliked about the thing, was how her pride look back at her when she, the Queen, would come home. Shouldn't they be happy to see her? To be blessed with her presence? Don't they know she's protecting them, by killing humans before those awful apes could kill her precious pride? Don't they know what a service she's doing for them, even with how ungrateful they are? Of course, they don't.
But the next generations did. Sure, the older lions were horrified of Desierta, but the cubs adored her and her victorious stories and all the new pretty toys they'd get when she'd come back from a hunt.
Fear, loved, hated, Desierta reined until she passed of old age, leaving no human uneaten or traumatized as she raised generations of man-eating, sadistic lions. Although sadistic and a little more than a little crazy, each one was raised with love and care, the same love and care Desierta was never able to get as a cub.
