Caw!

With dark feathers and beady black eyes, a small raven floated in the wind above the town. Its head cocked side to side as the noise of the small town bellow reached its ears. Tilting forward, the blackbird descended quickly, stretching out its wings as it found a suitable perch on a chimney.

Below there were the sounds of yelling and shouting as men gathered around in a tight circle. In the center, two of them stood, each squaring off with their opponent. Panting heavily one swiped the stream of blood from their lip, hoping to catch a break as the fight stalled for a brief moment. Then gathering enough energy to shoot a punch forward, the crowd roared as he connected with the other fighter. After a few more punches were thrown in quick succession to the other man's torso, the first found his opponent on the ground, signaling the end of the fight. The watchers erupted in a chorus of shouts both negative and positive before mainly dispersing in wait for the next brawl.

"Now gentlemen," A younger man piped up, facing a group of betters from where he sat in an old, small table. "Fairs fair. Pay up." With reluctant grumbles most would set their pence on the table, but a certain disgruntled man stood firm. "I will not. Something was clearly wrong with that fight!" Frowning, the man at the table squinted. "What? The boy won fair and square! Didn't you see? You've lost. Just because he's beat someone bigger than him doesn't mean he's cheated." He scoffed, looking up at the older man. They shook their head and crossed their arms. "No! He-he must have cheated!" Fed up, the bookie rose out of his chair and prowled around the table. Raising a hand he pushed a finger into the man in front of him's shoulder. "You lost your bet, now pay up unless you want to be in the ring next with me ." He growled, leaning into the previously protesting man's face. In a quick motion, he felt the coins drop into his hand before the man stumbled away. Scoffing, the seat at the table was filled once more and the coins had been scooped into his hand. Leaning back to place his feet on the wooden table, the temporary bookie counted them smugly.

He was a youthful man, 25, and had short brown hair. Blue eyes peered at the coins in his rough hands as he counted them. 180 pence sat in his palm. Nothing terrible. Tossing the change a bit in his hand the coins were promptly dropped into a small bag he carried underneath his coat. The next fight would begin soon enough, and he could expect more watchers would make their impulsive bids as they had done from the start of the day.

River

River moved gently and smoothly from the trees. Her dad had sent her to find a guard that would be suitable for her, since she was able to get away from all the others in the kingdom. But, he wasn’t exactly aware that she had gone out of the walls. As she moved through the thick forest she began to hear the yells and cheering of men. She knew she was getting close to her destination. Right before entering the small clearing she stopped for a second. She was wearing a tight black shirt with slightly tattered jeans and a thick black cloak. Before proceeding further she lifted the hood over her long, brown, braided hair, knowing it wasn’t common to see a women in this sort of scene.

River walked confidently into the clearing. A fight had just seemed to finish. The loser not so happy about how the fight ended almost refused to pay his debts. She hung her head low, blending in with the crowd of men and moved towards the front section of the surrounded circle. She scanned the area with her discolored eyes, getting bumped into by a few of the rowdy men beside her, her eyes narrowed and she grumbled to herself.

Rivers eyes traced back to the table where the man had been refusing to pay up, it wasn’t long before the collector stood and put him in his place and he quickly handed over his payment. It was so sad that men who lost Felt the need to call the fight unfair because their hurt egos can’t just pay up. She scoffed to herself before moving her eyes back to the dirt area where the next fight was soon to take place. She wasn’t quite sure who she was looking for, but she had a feeling that when she saw them she would know. She was counting on that. Hopefully she was able to find someone who wasn’t bland and boring and would maybe allow her to get away with a few things. She sighed to herself, feeling as if she was born into the wrong family. For it wasn’t only her who felt out of place in dresses and sitting in a place or royalty but she also knew there was no way out of it and that she was going have to learn to deal with it.

After the fighters had both moved off and were nursing their wounds from the fight, the bookie sighed. Taking his feet from the table the man rose to stand. His eyes never noticed the woman who entered the scene as he made his way across the ring, long coat rising slightly with the air now pushing underneath it. Making his way towards the winner of the brawl the man clapped his had on their shoulder. Both winced immediately after, the fighter in pain and the bookie in regret.

"Bah. Atta-boy, Cal. You got horseshoes in them gloves?" He jested, giving the fighter a small, careless shake. Rolling their eyes up at him the young man sniffed. "Yes, actually, Thomas." Cal replied in a deadpan. Raising his eyebrows with a scoff Thomas smiled. "Yeah? Well, hand 'em over. They're not yours." He sneered, stretching out his hand. Unwrapping a part of his hands, Cal revealed the weight that had been strapped there and placed it into Thomas' hand. The next fight was soon to begin, and he couldn't miss the opportunity to reel in more bets, even if the demand to do so was low.

As he spun around to leave Thomas immediately came nose to nose with the man who had gave him trouble earlier. Eyebrows raised Thomas took half a step backward. "I knew it! It was fixed! You lied!" The man bellowed, a snarl on his face. Shooting a quick glance to Cal who was still behind him. the bookie scoffed. "The hell it was. All bets are final anyways." Thomas asserted, hoping no one else who had given him their money would notice. With a furious grunt, the stranger reeled back his fist before throwing a punch. Spotting the motion, Thomas lunged forward as they aimed to strike, blocking their arm with his own and threw a quick counter punch to their nose. Cal jumped to his feet in surprise behind him as Thomas then grabbed the stunned man and kicked his leg out, pushing him to the ground. Dropping a knee on the angry better he pounded another punch into their torso. The scuffle would catch the attention of those nearby, all turning to watch or yell at the two locked on the ground.

* (even tho there were no gloves I'm just gonna have them have some)

River

River watched as the people shuffled around, most being large men who spoke very loud to each other. Her eyes seemed to draw back to the book keeper who was talking to the man who had won the most recent fight. She watched, feeling something off was either the situation. No one else seemed to care about the encounter but River continued to watch with her discolored eyes as the winner swiftly handed over the weights, Ahhhh so maybe the loser of the fight was right to throw a fit about a weighted fight.

As the thought crossed Rivers mind she watched the loser approach the book keeper and turn around, the two nose to nose. Oh this is going to be fun. River thought to herself as the two began to serve each other some good hits and roll around in the diet beneath them.

To say the least, River was surprised that the book keeper was one to take the chance of cheating. But, people did what they had to to make money around here. Although river and the other man were the only ones to have seemed to catch the act, people were quick to jump into cheering as the unplanned fight unraveled in front of them.

Just from the fight so far she could tell the bookkeeper had taken the chance of cheating because it was obvious that the man could handle himself with someone who tried to call him out. He was holding himself in the fight and she had a feeling about the man. Something that interest her. She wasn’t exactly sure what it was, but it was something she was going to continue to watch and possible approach the man afterward.

Thomas

Holding the other down, Thomas kept a snarl on his face. He had to stop a few stray punches and reposition himself when a kick came his way but overall had the man under his control. Grunting as they thrashed beneath him Thomas winced as he felt their knee ram his leg. Grabbing their lapel Thomas yanked his opponent up closer to his own face. Producing a knife that was more for cutting string and thread than people, Thomas held it to the older man's throat.

"You're going to stop now and give in, or you're going to get cut. The money's mine now," Thomas hissed. The face that looked back at him was less than pleased to have the knife poking at his throat, but reluctantly he went limp. Stepping up he kept a wary eye on them as he slipped the small knife back where it belonged. "Bastard..." The bookie muttered. Feeling Cal at his back Thomas gave a glance to him with wild eyes, yet was relieved to be out of the scuffle. He didn't dare turn his back on his former opponent as he moved away.

"Shows over! Go back to waiting for the real fight." Thomas barked at the ogling crowd, waving his hands in the air before he went back to his table. Searching the ground Thomas reached down to pick up a small box he had left. Sighing he dropped the weights in the box as footsteps could be heard behind him. Waving off Cal Thomas snorted. "Are you okay, man?" His friend asked, concerned. "Yes, yes." came the dismissive reply as the box was repositioned in his hands. "Can't spend all day here, especially after that. Go fix yourself up instead of worrying about me."

River watched as the men continued to grapple on the ground as the crowd around them cheered, encouraging the risen violence. She watched in awe, there was something about the man that drew her to him. She definitely wanted to check into that. She also could tell he could handle himself in intense situations and get himself out of them as well. A good contender for the job.

The fight was almost over as fast as it had started. She was one of one or two that had scene why the fight had broke out, she was also going to try and use this to her advantage. When the man separated and the bookkeeper moved back to his post she began to slip through the crowd in his direction. Someone was checking on the man before he was shooed off. When she approached she tossed a small bag of coins on the table to get his attention.

"It's not often you see a bookkeeper apart of the rigged fights. But I don't blame you, we all have to make our money somehow." Rivers voice was low as she spoke to him. She then lifted her gaze to him, her discolored eyes watching him. It was a few moments of silence before she continued to speak. "I can offer you a more steady income, more than you could imagine." Rivers eyes studied him and tried to read the mans actions, waiting for his response.

Thomas

As he gathered his things, footsteps clicked over the hard ground. He wouldn't pay them much mind. There were lots of footsteps around him. As Cal begrudgingly shuffled away from him to fix his own wounds again, a loud clink sounded on the table before Thomas could turn to leave. Head snapping around quickly to eye the bag his gaze slowly rose to the person who had dropped the pouch.

It was a lithe yet muscular woman. Her hair was long and wavy and she stood only slightly shorter than him. Yet the most interesting feature about her was her eyes: one a dark brown and the other a pale blue. He had never seen that before, usually, people stuck to one eye color. She wore a thick, black coat over her similarly colored shirt. Frowning at the coin she had tossed Thomas looked away from her. "Bets are closed if you haven't noticed." He grumbled curtly.

However, her first words grabbed his attention back. Narrowing his eyes at the woman Thomas dropped his box back on the table. "Bold of you to claim. I don't rig fights, Miss." Thomas scowled just as lowly as he kept his eyes on his contents. The bag that was clearly filled with coin bore a hole in him as if it were watching him with an intent glare. When she spoke again Thomas went back to eyeing her. "Huh. I don't want your charity. I don't doubt you saw that old man have it in for me."

River watched the man with curiosity. It was obvious the man had some fire in his personality but she wasn’t going to be thought as dumb for her correct accusations. ”I may be a woman but I am no fool like most of the men here who get a pleasure out of seeing blood. You played a part in making sure one of the fighters was a little more...” River scoffed slightly as she searched for the correct words. She leaned forward towards the man as she finished, Heavy Handed. River said softly before she leaned back to straighten herself and cleared her throat.

River let out a small laugh when he said he didn’t want her putty, she could tell that the bag o pins seemed to be taunting the man as they sat on the table. ”It is not pity. It’s a job offer. Here is the deal, I need a guard. The ones in the wall of the kingdom are about as useful as rocks when it comes to me. You have potential. I can promise you a place to stay inside the walls and a plentiful amount of coins as payment.” River scanned the man. She wanted to get straight to the point and not mess around. She made sure her voice was on the quiet side because there could be people there who would try and pull some shit that would not end well, especially since she was a royal.

”I wouldn’t throw the offer away too quickly if I were you. There are many duties you can do in addition. Such as educating me on your skills, which I saw only a glimmer of. You could say there is a good amount of people that want me dead.” River had slipped a knife from her coat and began to play with the blade. It moving effortlessly through her fingers before she moved her discolored gaze to the man again.

Thomas

Placing his palm flat on the table on the other side of the box from the woman, Thomas leaned on his hand for a moment. Listening to her make the case the man scoffed as well in return when she mentioned how she knew exactly how he had fixed the fight. Shaking his head Thomas could only hope she wasn't going to go digging through his box to find the weights sloppily placed inside. Straightening his posture a bitter smile at being caught a second time peeled over his lips.

Hearing her proposal Thomas quit his leaning on the table. Raising his brows the man waved his hands. "No, no, no.." he interjected as she was speaking. "You're telling me that you can't trust your own guards so you, the princess, come here of all places to find some random man to be your new one. Now that is rich." Thomas ended with a half-hearted chuckle. A part of his mind nagged at him, though. Clearly the money she was offering was more than he made here... and likely more than working with his family... "As tempting as that is, I don't think working as someone's personal guard is my...thing." Thomas finished.

Shaking his head slowly once more the man adjusted his coat, fiddling with a small flap on its front. Listening to her pipe up once more the man pursed his lips in consideration. Him teach her skills? Tilting his head as he watched her produce a knife to fiddle with Thomas almost snorted. "You've got the-the knife, that's not enough?" He sarcastically tried in protest with a small wave of his finger at the weapon. Glancing away from her when she looked up and over to the bag of coins Thomas eyed it thoughtfully. "Why are your guards so useless, if I may ask?" The thought had occurred to him that perhaps they were so useless due to the threats she truly faced. Were they too big for the trained guards to handle, and why did she think he could? Folding his arms in front of himself Thomas raised a brow curiously.

(lmk if I need changes btw)
