Daughter of the kind healer Nyasi, it is a shock to everyone when Alala’s peaceful mother names her daughter after the battle cries of war. Her father is unknown, a secret Nyasi has never bothered to reveal. As long as she remembers, Alala has always had her mother by her side. Her name is a tribute to the lioness her mother could’ve been if she wasn’t destined to be a healer; vicious, powerful, barbaric. Born wailing and covered in blood, Alala likes to joke that she was born the same way she will die, much to her mother’s distaste. Since she was a cub, Alala has never been afraid of pain or dying. Due to bravery or stupidity, no one knows. It has never truly sunk in how easy it is to die - at the end of the day, Nyasi is always there to tend to her wounds. Every scrape, every scratch, every splinter, has been healed by her doting mother, giving Alala the false security that she is untouchable. It is high time she learns what it is to feel pain, fear, and to remember the fragility of mortality, memento mori. After all, she won’t always have her mother to heal her, and the time will come when Alala has to lick her own wounds clean.
