Mitja heard the stories from the other, older, lionesses. About how his father was. A violent, arrogant ruler with a heart colder than the night. Tafari, who had taken his fathers name, Mitja's grandfather, Baraq as if to mock the weakened leader after his death. And yet... Eglantine talked about that half of his father, but also talked about a side of his father he hardly showed another except his few cubs and the lionesses he mated with. Eglantine, who use to tell him Baraq and she were very much in love and that despite the dead lions iron claws sunk into the prides' history, he was a pragmatic leader. And a loving but awkward father. Sometimes, when Mitja sits up a night he tries to remember his father. It doesn't always work. His memories are blurry, but he doesn't understand why.
