A stoic male lion approaches you. He introduces himself as Hazel Mane, king of the Lycaon Pride. He welcomes you warmly to his lands, offering you food and shelter should you need it. Next to him stands a small, skittish spotted hyena. It watches you cautiously. Hazel Mane explains that he took the creature under his wing, having found it as an orphaned cub after it’s mother was killed by poachers, and it’s been his companion ever since. The birds flocking around him, he continues, are all victims of the exotic pet trade. He was able to set them free when the truck carrying them broke down. You ask him if that’s how he got his scars, as he has a lot of scars for being such a young king. He laughs and nods. “Poachers tend to put up one hell of a fight, but I haven’t lost yet!” He remarks proudly. He lets out a soft grunt and from trees behind him a human woman appears. She speaks to him in human words, which neither of you understand, before patting him firmly on his side and scratching behind his ear. Hazel Mane purrs, then tells you this “ranger” has been following him and his pride. She assists him keeping his lands free of poachers, traps, and human refuse. Apparently not all humans are dirty poachers! Hazel Mane has seen first hand what ill willed and ignorant humans can do, so he’s made it his life’s mission to clean up after them.
