Maybe I wasn’t there…
——-
Esmé grew up in the outerskirts of the pride, deemed as the valley. Their mother was as forgetful as the rest of the ones that would fade into the landscape as time went by.
They witnessed the downfall of the previous king, and how the sickness in the pride spread to him. At their own paws, they saw the king collapse and vomit up black blood. Esmé was…. fascinated. This fascination would be their downfall.
They grew an obsession with this black substance, being able to touch and morph it with a simple paw. They commanded it, noticing how it obeyed to their every whim. It was a delightful find and a secretive one.
Time passed and a heir needed to replace the king who slowly grew more sick and injured. Most of the cubs were chased off, with only the few being too afraid of being infected. Fortunately, Esmé had received the prophecy from The Seeker to be the next ruler.
Thus, everything should’ve went well, right?
Unfortunately, the holy powers that were told was going to be blessed upon them to combat the voidless enemy never happened. All of the ancestors in the pride were dazed, including Divine who couldn’t see Esme’s future in the pride anymore.
However, they wouldn’t give up. In a fit of panic, they stapled wings from a dove onto their pelt. It shocked the pride, but the passing of the king happened way too fast. Esmé had clearly been rejected, but they still stood as ruler, breaking the law of the heavenly forces.
They had no other choice but to take Esmé. Esmé fit into the role, faking the holy powers that they should have. Their judgement of the pride rests on their very shoulders to this day.
It is only up to them if they can prove to the heavenly forces that they deserve what had been blessed centuries before.

Relations with Lions
Erebus:
Esmé never knew Erebus as more than just a rival. They had heard of the stories from the past, depicting of Dakota and Erebus’s secret…relationship?
Erebus is still deeply saddened by the passing of Dakota but he holds no other lion to blame than himself. He holds grief, and doesn’t view Esmé as a worthy leader.
Esmé doesn’t know this and rather respects him instead.
Remis:
Esmé had seen the king’s rise and his downfall, all at similar times. Esmé greatly respected the previous king, even if that wasn’t his true father.
Remis didn’t notice Esmé until the end of his life, wondering why he hadn’t been blessed with Dakota’s power.
