*~ You decide to stop in this strange land to rest. You've been walking for hours now, your paws hurt and your weary eyes crave for a nice, long nap. This territory is unfamiliar to you, you scent another pride nearby; the pungent odor of subordinate males and diligent huntresses marking the boundaries, the sweet aroma of warm milk being provided to sleepy, snuggly cubs by their mothers, the mouthwatering redolence of freshly-killed prey...huh?
What's /that/ smell? Something more powerful and thunderous than the other lions' scents in this land. It floods your nostrils in an instant and screams in your brain like an angry hawk on the alert, and it's getting closer. What should you do? Run? Hide? Stand your ground? Was this a friendly pride, or would they have your pelt for trespassing? Before you can consider your options, a lion appears before you from the tall grasses. His scent tells you right away that he is the leader of this pride, the king of this land. He dips his head in welcome and invites you to come for a stroll with him.~*

*~ You snort awake, your fur still oddly cold from the strange land you experienced in your dream. You had been in some strange place, far from the sweltering sunlit plains of Africa and the culture of prides. Well, perhaps those weird dogs did live in some sort of pride, or some kind of similar community. A subordinate male struts by where you lay, he stops and comments that you look like you just narrowly avoided getting stepped on by an elephant. Still abysmally confused, you explain your dream to him.

"You must have termites in your brain, my friend," he laughs, flopping onto his haunches in his merriment. "Why, what outlandish stories were you told as a cub? Canines, actually living in some sort of organized group like our great pride here? Please!" His laughter finally subsides as he raises back to his paws, encouraging you to stand also. "Everyone knows that dogs of any kind are FAR too stupid to have any sense of togetherness or hierarchy of such structure." He shakes out his mane and begins to pad away, still chuckling. "Makes me proud to be a lion, that's for sure. We're far more dignified and have more self-respect than a bunch of sniffing, drooling curs." He beckons t you with his tail and grins mischievously. "Maybe consider laying off all those lizards, dude. They're doing something to ya."

You slowly follow your companion, your mind still wandering. Those dogs weren't actually dogs, at least not the kind you've seen romping around human settlements or accompanying them on hunts. They...called themselves something else.

...Didn't they refer to themselves as a pack...of wolves?*~
