| Once upon a time there was a volcano here, a massive, angry beast of a mountain that loomed ominously over the surrounding grasslands, spewing fire and brimstone. But its last great eruption proved to be too much for it to handle, and the mountain collapsed down into itself in a spectacular death throe that ravaged the landscape. Over time, life returned to the area. Rain pooled at the deepest part of the new caldera, forming a massive lake. Grasses grew in rich and lush, drawing prey animals that, in turn, brought in the predators. Now a lion pride calls this place home, founded by their great king, Mbhali. They are protected on all sides by the steep, imposing walls of the caldera, the only entrance being a sloping path to the north. Water and prey are plentiful and they have little to fear from enemies. For twenty-two generations now they have been ruled by grand sepia-based kings, the most recent of whom is their twenty-fourth king, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock XVIII. The pride is large and strong, and the air is filled with the lighthearted sounds of cubs at play. The pride thrives. Mteketeo - the great fire mountain - is dead. Long live those who dwell in its carcass. |
