Abrafo savagely ripped into the zebra carcass, nosing for the hot, tasty guts inside. He snarled when the panting lionesses, circling, hungry for their efforts, go too close before he sat satiated himself, face streaked with crimson gore, his pale white eyes glaring out of a bloody mask, hiding the grizzled gray of his chin and the battle scars on his face. This was fine, Nnedi thought as she circled, her paws quick and her head high and alert, waiting for the slightest chance to be allowed some of the kill. She was hungry.

Finally, finally, when the buzzards started circling overhead, their shadows dappling the backs of the lionesses, Abrafo looked up.

“Azara, come here,” he said congenially, in a voice thick with blood. Azara, a sleek golden lioness and his senior wife and huntress strode forward obediently.

“My King?” she said, inching towards the carcass. But before she got far, he reached out like lighting and slapped her hard across the face, drawing blood.

“What did I say about Zebra?” he snarled at her, standing over her. “I asked for wildebeest.”

Since when do Kings dictate what his wives kill, Nnedi thought bitterly as Abrafo savaged his queen—enough to hurt but not enough to seriously damage her ability to hunt. When he’d finished he turned at the other lionesses, who had crept forward in horror and in hunger and he roared at them, bloody spittle flying from his mouth.

“GET OUT OF HERE! NONE OF YOU WILL EAT!” he roared, lashing his tail. “This carcass is mine, and only mine, and the rest of you will hunt something else if you’re hungry. You lionesses close to your heat will stay at the home tree, but the rest of you get out of my sight!”

The hunting party, all eleven lionesses scattered into the grass.

Most went back to the baobab tree where they would complain and commiserate with the nursing mothers, but Nnedi didn’t want to be around the others at the moment, even if it meant defying orders as her first heat was sure to be soon, according to the other lionesses. She was angry, hungry, and wanted to taste blood.

She swiftly slunk off into the golden grass, further away from the camp than would have been expected for her but at the moment she didn’t care. She managed to run some hyenas off a gazelle and was happily crunching on its bones when she caught the scent through the blood—another male lion, and close by.

Immediately she was on high alert, but there was a buzzing in her belly. A challenger! Someone who might overthrow their indolent and wicked King perhaps?

Atarashi stalked around, through the grass, growling quietly. He was fully aware of the fact this was a pride's territory, but he really didn't care. He didn't think that what he came here to do would take very long- he was here to battle and maybe even kill the king of this pride. Atarashi had heard tales about this King- most of them saying he was cruel, even to his lionesses. Some said that he was huge, as big as the biggest trees here, with teeth and claws the size of branches, and sharp as possible. Atarashi growled again, louder, as he thought about the evil lion. His pride had raised him to be brave, kind, and respectful, especially to lionesses, who did so much for their prides. They hunted, they birthed cubs, and so much more. How any lion could disrespect his lionesses was unthinkable to Atarashi, and had decided that this king needed to be taught a lesson somehow, despite his pride begging him not to, saying he'd be killed brutally, but, one again, he didn't care.

At first he was just a shape in the pale grass, a sunshadow on the savannah. She could make out the curve of his mighty shoulders, the bristle of his thick mane, and somewhere in there, the glint of shining green jewel beetle eyes. She bristled, stood, her own eyes wide as she swished her tail. Normally male lions were a threat to the pride, the killer of new cubs in order to make room for their own lineages. Often they were pushy and violent. But no one could be as bad as Abrafo, and Nnedi felt that the old bastard's time had come--in the form of this golden lion.

Perhaps it was little more than desperate hope but she stood up, off her scavenged meal and padded curiously towards the great.

"You don't know what kind of land you're on, stranger," she said. "But I welcome you, all the same." she asked, stopping a respectful distance from the male. Her hopes so far had been confirmed. He was powerfully build, firm muscles rippling elegantly beneath a subtly spotted tawny hide. His limbs were thick and corded but sleek--for he was young, perhaps not much older than she herself. He had a good face, a wise face, and she couldn't help but find herself sucked into an intense green gaze. She righted herself.

"Who are you and what do you want?"

Atarashi stared at the lioness for a few seconds, thinking. He'd known he'd be discovered quickly- Atarashi never was much good at being stealthy- but he didn't have a plan for what to do when he was found, so he quickly thought something up. "Well, I'm Atarashi, and, I won't lie, I'm here to fight and maybe even kill that criminal Abrafo." He replied, growling slightly as he said the cruel lion's name.

This lioness seemed to be one of the king's and she didn't look to be in perfect condition, in his opinion, and growled at the thought of what the other lionesses must look like. He hated Abrafo even more as he thought of it, his already intense hated for him growing. Atarashi strongly believed in respecting one's lionesses, no matter what. He believed that you fought for them, if they couldn't do it themselves. You protected them, kept them warm in the winter months, and found them the best shaded spots in the summer, and always made sure that had enough food.

Nnedi nodded her head sadly, and with some chagrin and embarrassment. A King's reputation often affected that of his lionesses, insofar that an individual lioness often represented him. And when a King was cruel, wicked, stupid or frail, word travelled on the wings of birds to other lions. Reputation meant little if it couldn't be backed up by claw or jaw. But reputation was important to the rise and fall of Kings. For otherwise how would it be known that a Pride was ready for the taking, or that a Pride was strong and fierce?

Abrafo's reputation had certainly spread far, far enough that this young challenger could name him and describe him as a criminal. And in a way he was absolutely correct--Abrafo's cruelty exceeded any rough but normally accepted treatment of lionesses, and even that of his second, who, for reasons unknown to Nnedi, fawned upon his King like a hyena pup to her queen. And he was vicious with it.

But this--this challenger, this lion. Looking him over, for size and strength he was certainly a worthy contender. Though Abrafo was getting towards the end of his middle years, the dark lion was enormous, heavy fanged and long clawed with a mane as thick as quicksand. His power, as well as his cruelty had to be just as well known.

At his words though, her ears perked up and her tails twitched, whether in more welcome or a strange anticipation she could hardly say.

"Well met," she said, grinning a toothy smile, her overlong fangs flashing in the sunlight. She wondered briefly if he thought she was ugly for them--these echoes of the line of Smilidon. "But you don't know what you're getting into. This land is dangerous, and in certain seasons, thick with men and their wickedness as well as that of Abrafo. You'll need help, navigating this place--understanding it. For I wouldn't see our only hope killed."

"Oh, I'm sure I can find him. It couldn't be too hard to find a lion like him here, I imagine. And who would help me? You?" He said, adding the question as a second thought. Atarashi thought that he could use some help, maybe. Though he'd much prefer help from his own pride, but, they'd been too afraid to help, even his own father, the king, wouldn't dare help him. His mother wouldn't, his sister wouldn't, and the rest of the lions in his pride certainly wouldn't. Yet, Atarashi didn't know why- all were raised and followed his same beliefs, so, why not fight for those beliefs. He'd made a speech of sorts, judging his pride based on such a thing, which, was met with begging and pleading from his pride, trying to keep him from going, insisting he'd die, but Atrashi refused to listen, despite what they told him.

"It's not a matter of finding him," Nnedni said, shaking her head. "He's not hard to find. Getting to him will be harder though, because we wives have all been told to drive off intruders at any cost," she said. "He will not suffer a challenge without great pressure to do so...overhwelmingly so. No," she flicked her tail at the newcomer. "You can't just wander in and challenge him immediately. You need a battlefield for that, and if you want to suceed, you must wait--and most importantly, you must survive this place. For newcomers, it's not easy. Do you think you're the first to come to this place?

"All I can ask if that you be the first one not to die."

"Well, I know that I can't just wander in and slaughter the king. And I'm assuming that it's dangerous here- I'm smart enough to understand that much." Atarashi said, flicking his tail. "And, I certainly won't be the first to die- far from it. My father has taken me on raids, of the dens and territory of evil prides- I know what I'm getting into here. And, when we did, it wasn't hard for me, even if the king had many lionesses and such." He explained, his green eyes narrowing slightly at the lioness, briefly shaking his head.
