Had an idea and I wanted to put it out here.

The Basic Idea

The idea behind this is to have a Tortoiseshell base OR singular marking in the game. Of course, no two torties look alike as the color distribution varies widely. So, this base or marking would be unique and novel to Lioden: every lion would have a randomized, unique version of it. However, I have no idea how this would be coded or if it would be extremely difficult to code.

Maybe it sounds stupid, but this idea comes from a strange source: Spinda from the Pokemon franchise. Every single Spinda has a randomized pattern and there are, as I was told, millions of subtly different variations.

Every lion that possessed the tortoiseshell mark or base (one or the other) would have a totally unique coat, as the red, black, and white would be randomly inserted into the coat at different levels. If made into a base, it would have have a ??? or random genetic group based on the majority of whatever colour the tortie ended up being, and would probably never be able to pass any special bases. I think passing Auburns, Blacks, and Whites could be a decent start, and passing down Torties could be rare.

(To clarify, every possibility would not have to be drawn individually.)

What does a Tortie cat look like in real life?

For those of you who don't know, here a few examples:
Fairly even distribution of red and black:

Tortie with lots of white (there is a fine line between Calico and Tortie, however, I would suggest fusing the Tortoiseshell marking with calico possibilities)

Reasons for support or reasons for no support!

* NO - Too complex to code, focus could be devoted to other bases and markings.
* DEPENDS - Why randomize it? A basic tortoiseshell base would be nice, even if it doesn't change.

Suggestions and Improvements!

This suggestion has 48 supports and 16 NO supports.

While cool....I am imagining the amount of art and coding that could go into this would me astronomical. Besides not wanting to put our staff through that, I feel like it would take away from the time they could spend adding other new features that keep the game exciting - and we could have many more new markings and bases in that amount of time. If you had, maybe, a series of "tortoiseshell Black/red/white" marks that players could add to create their own torti lions that would be cooler, but not this complex genetic idea.

I agree that this idea has a lot of coding involved with it, but that's for the mods to decide, not us.
Personally, I like this idea- but just base. Markings would be difficult and almost unrealistic, but a base would be really cool.

If they can't make it different for each lion, then I think just a normal non-changing tortoiseshell base would be a nice addition.

I would support a single tortoiseshell base, but considering how many lions are on lioden, trying to create unique bases for each tortoiseshell lion would be an impossible task for just Xylax to do.

The idea would be to code it without having to draw every variation individually, though I have no idea how that would be done as I can't even fathom basic computer coding. I am fairly certain it's possible though.

Thank you for your replies! I appreciate having feedback so quickly <3

I could see it as a base, maybe sort of like vitiligo marks or the golden bases where there can be more than 1 design~
So like, Tortoiseshell 1, Tortoiseshell 2, and so on~ Frankly, with a lot of the bases recently being super super similar to others that I can hardly tell them apart [IMO at least .__ .], I'd be for this idea as tortoiseshell/calico has a LOT of variety to be seen~

Also, if I remember right, Calico is a white cat with blotches of orange/black while tortoiseshell has the two colors 'mixed' together or something like that if it helps~ Dun quote me on it tho~ x3

Random thought: If Calico/Tortoiseshell became a base or marking, would it also adhere to real-world genetics and be limited to females only?

In real-world cats, only females can have both orange and black colors on the coat at the same time, as both colors are coded for on the X-chromosome. As each cell cluster has a randomly activated X-chromosome that will suppress the other, this manifests in the patchy coloration.

Males do exist, but are an anomaly. The arise from either a defect that gives them three sex chromosomes (XXY), or as a chimera. Cats with XXY are infertile. Chimeras, being two embryos fused together in the womb to form one animal, have two sets of DNA throughout different parts of their bodies. Though they can be fertile, they can only ever pass the genetics of one of the animals they are formed from, so they would be able to pass only either the orange or black color; but not both.

I'd be fine if every Tortie base was the same xD I like the idea.

Possibilities?
Each time a tortie cub is born, dice are rolled, which selects an item from a small pool of black splotchy markings to overlay atop their other colors, This creates the illusion of randomness-- the tortie cub will not necessarily have the same black spots as its parent(s).
--Short examplanation if i'm not being clear:
------Feline 2 breeds Feline 2.
------Tortie 2 breeds Tortie (1-8)
Several layers of different black marks come together to make fairly unique patterns.

It's probably impossible to do at this time, but, there could also be an element of, if base equals any of (values of the various "pale" coats), then black will be grey, as a way to mimic dilute tortie/calico
Then any Calico cases will be handled by white markings
