In African Lion prides, at least (I'm not sure about other species), it's not rare/uncommon to see multiple lions co-leading a pride. They share breeding opportunities and duties, and this often allows for a stronger hold on lionesses and territory due to the fact that it's more than one male defending the pride. I'm not sure how this would/could best apply to the aspects of Lioden, but I feel that sub males should have more of a role than looking pretty with a few side benefits.
