Hey there, I was thinking of making an adoptable/closed species, and decided on an owl-kangaroo mashup of an animal... But I've never been particularly good at designing new species, so I was wondering if people could give me tips on how it's coming along. X'D

Kangaroos have some weird feet by the way! Did you know that an ancient relative of kangaroo had only a single-digited hoofed foot? Weird.

So it (which I've nicknamed Hootaroo) has a kangaroo tail, feet and legs, and owl torso, wings and head which will vary between owl species, and also has saddle feathers like a rooster, though that will probably also vary. These are just doodles of the species and not what I'll use as an adoptable base. :)

very cute. My brain wants it to have feathery ears though.

Haha, thanks! Ear-ears or feathers like the long-eared owl? c: When I make different species bases, the horned/eared owls will have some feathers. The one above is loosely based on a boreal owl. But if you mean actual ears, I could do those too!

I think you're doing very well! I think bird anatomy is one of the hardest things to get right, and that owl looks really good! The only thing, and it doesn't even really need changing, is the head. (In my opinion, at least.) It depends on what species you're basing it off of, but generally owls tend to have a more... rectangular (or squashed oval) head. Example, example and example. Although, some species have a more rounded head - barn owl, great grey, barred owl, etc...
All I'm really saying is that they usually have smaller foreheads. (More like your two rightmost examples.)

BUT!

If you're going for a less realistic, more 'cartoony' 'chibi' -ish look, you've nailed it. And I can tell that you've put a lot of effort into the anatomy of the feet!

I really like this species so far! I'm keen to see it develop!

EDIT: You ninja'd me. c: Boreal owl, I see. Well I think it's gorgeous either way! I'm not used to giving constructive feedback, but I gave it a try anyway! x3

Thanks so much Lia-Lin! Since I want it to be more accurate I'll probably smoosh his head around a bit. :D Chibi is cute and the actual base I eventually use for adopts might be more chibi (for size/ease of editing reasons, lol) but as a species reference I want to make them more realistic.

Tbh I can't wait to make a great grey one with that crazy facial disc, haha. ^^

That's probably a clever decision, making the adopts more chibi. I know someone else who made a species I like has done that. c:

Great grey's. x3 If you need any help, I'd love to assist you!
