Short Spine Syndrome is exactly what it sounds like: A shortened spine. I came across this when I was on snapchat and found an article on The Dodo's snapchat story on a dog named Quasimodo with short spine syndrome. Link to article here: https://www.thedodo.com/german-shephard-short-spine-syndrome-2314526250.html I was thinking that if we did have this mutation on Lioden then it would appear at birth and wouldn't be deadly UPDATE 6/15/17 _________________ Thank you for all of your suggestions on this possible mutation on Lioden! I am planning on drawing this mutation still (I never got around to it sorry!!!) Here are some updated ideas though!! Q: Lethal or nah? A: No, due to the help of the pride, the mutie would survive such as Squishwolf seen here https://retrieverman.net/2014/04/18/deformed-wolf/ who survived with the help of his pack until a hunter killed him Q: How rare? A: Extremely rare, as rare as breeding a lethal. Q: How is the mutation obtained?: A: Generations of inbreeding, fatherXdaughter then one of those cubs breeds with their father/grandpa and so on. Again and again and again Q: Would there be different spine lengths like how there are different mane mutations for females? A: I would say only two variations, extremely short (like Squishwolf) and short, but maybe only one variation depending on how our Founding Felines think. Q: Do breeding items help? A: No they wouldn't help, maybe there could be one made to increase the chance but I don't see it happening. Any other questions? Please let me now so I can answer them!! |

I supported, but I have Questions, just guess or fill the info. Would they be rare? Or like a mane feather? Maybe the rarity of a Pon/Dwrf How would they be obtained? With the same breeding chances of for example a primal/AMp/Melan/Pon? Would you have to use breeding items? Would the mutation be able to pass? 0 players like this post! Like? |

Rare: Yes, much like the rarity of having a dwarf cub (since there are only seventeen dogs known with SSS) Obtained: I was thinking that they could be obtained by either interbreeding (like a father x daughter situation) or that males would be carriers for the mutation Breeding items: not needed 0 players like this post! I'm sorry to say, that thus far this mutation has been rejected. Not that that means anything here, lol. We have purple eyes and green lions so it's possible. 0 players like this post! Like? |

I'd say that this should be lethal. While it would be nice to see one of these poor lions wobbling around, I feel like they wouldn't be able to hunt, and they'd be more prone to injury. See, lions have a very active lifestyle! They're running, pouncing, and doing all sorts of things. Mobility would be remarkably limited for these lions - Not to mention, they'd have extreme difficulty eating. Without the ability to tear flesh off of bones due to their lack of neck, they wouldn't be able to eat. I'd say that they'd be able to survive until they were weaned. Perhaps you could have flavor messages documenting the fall in health of a short-spined lion cub? For example, they're completely healthy while being nursed, if a little less active, but when it comes time to be weaned, they have difficulty tearing off bits of meat due to their inability to use their neck muscles? 0 players like this post! Believe it or not, this isn't lethal in the wild . . . behold, squishwolf, who likely survived to adulthood with the help of their pack, and squishfox. I don't know squishfox's story but from the grass I reckon they lived in an urban area and could scavenge. Squishwolf, though, ran wild in Russia until a hunter bagged them. It would be reasonable to take them off the 'bah just another lethal' list. 0 players like this post! Like? |

I have a question. Is this known to happen in felines? Because both examples given were of canines. I'm no biologist so I don't know if it has anything to do with a canine-specific gene. Obviously we have black lions with white manes (see my king) in the game so even if they're not possible, that doesn't rule things out, but I was just wondering. 0 players like this post! Like? |

I couldn't find a case with felines, the only cases I have found are mostly dogs, foxes, and horses! 0 players like this post! Like? |
