From the moment they are born, children possess a strange birthmark on their forearms. Each mark is unique, and each mark is shared by one other animal in the world. This animal is destined to be their companion until death.

Around the age of ten, children begin their search for their animal companion, the one who was connected to them at birth. Almost everyone has a companion, some rarer than others. Those who don't have one are shunned and considered beneath the ones who do.

But when a prince loses his precious animal companion, maybe the only one he can turn to for help is someone who lacks a companion of their own.

Within the shadows of the alleyways, a cloaked figure moved. Each step he took was cautious, his eyes scanning his surroundings as if expecting trouble to pounce on him from any corner. No one could discover his identity. It could ruin him. To think he’d lost his shoroko! His kirin was his pride and joy; not only would the denizens of the kingdom be disappointed in him for losing her, but someone with ill intentions could use this newfound vulnerability against him.

The prince had heard tell of a huntress - a skilled woman who knew just what she was doing and had experience with the outside world. Lance, on the other hand, had rarely ever set foot outside his castle. It was sprawling enough that he never felt much of a need to step outside its many lush gardens or its winding, intricate halls.

Now all he needed to do was locate this woman. There were many places she could have been, and he wasn’t entirely sure where to start looking. The town outside his castle was so overwhelming!

He stopped, for a moment, to glance outside of the alleyways he clung to and watch the people bustle about. A wide cobblestone street wound between many beautiful two-story, wooden-framed houses and shops. Iron or wooden signs hung down from some of these shops, advertising bakeries or smithies or taverns or inns or toymakers or all manner of things. The smell of freshly-baked pastries made Lance’s stomach growl, and he found himself almost unconsciously drawn out from the shadows and into the bright midday sunlight.

It was too late by the time he realized he’d become one of the crowd on the streets. Thankfully, though, nobody sent him a second glance, and he kept his hood low over his eyes, casting his face in deep shadow.

Kokani was heading her way to her newly acclaimed buyer, they had ordered 5 sabre cat fangs about a week ago and she had now just got all 5. It was a hard journey for her though, most sabre cats are with people as well as the only ones she found had the jump on her. She was lucky enough to receive only a gash from one of those oversized cats. She was looking for her desired name plastered on a wooden sign "Thaine's -------" She had forgotten the rest, but knew it had her buyer's name in it.

She remembered what it was like to be in the town below the castle, being away from her fake home for about a week really made her realize what was actually out there and how hard it was to be there, sure it was about a fifth of a time she had stayed for a buyer, but it was more stressful since all she was doing was travelling and other tasks then.

Kokani had now found her desired location, she didn't care to look at the sign, she just headed in based on memory, a knock coming before she entered slowly. She saw her buyer at the counter of his little shop "I have the saber fangs you wanted to buy." She said with a colder tone than usual, she always liked to sound intimidating since she was literally an outcast in the kingdom. Thaine looked at Kokani "Ah yes! My fangs!" His unmanly voice spoke. Kokani continued walking towards his counter, grabbing her bag with Thaine's desired teeth "How much are ya gonna pay me for these?" She asked.

Thaine thought for a bit "Our original deal was 21 gold, but it took you a week and I have people in need of those threatening me right now." He said, adding on after a bit "How'd 17 gold be?" He asked. Kokani wasn't having in today, she had already been harassed for simply walking into the town, but nonetheless she agreed "Since your a first time customer, I'll let you off with that." She said. She pulled out the fangs and they exchanged their part of the trade, not long after she walked out, wishing a good day to her buyer. She was now of the shop, taking a glance back and turning to walk to the central area to look for anything that interested her.

Lance allowed the crowd to sweep him along, merely following the people in front of him. His footsteps were quick and somewhat worried; he kept casting wary glances over his shoulder and checking to see if his hood was still down. He couldn’t let anyone discover his identity.

Scanning the crowd as he walked, he saw someone clad in the garb of a hunter disappear into an interesting-looking little shop. Lance stopped and blinked his bright orange eyes. Was that her? He wasn’t sure, and he was more than a little nervous to spontaneously enter a shop he had no business in if it turned out not to be the woman he was looking for.

But his kirin was missing. He had to do something. He wouldn’t find his precious shoroko without taking a few risks.

…Still, he couldn’t make himself do it. He decided to wait for her to come outside. So with a long sigh, he made his way over to the entrance of an alleyway and stood there in the shadows, trying to blend in as he kept a close watch on the door of the shop.

Soon enough, the woman came back out - and she looked exactly like the descriptions of the well-known huntress he’d heard. It had to be her. Narrowing his eyes, he hurried out of the alleyway toward her, tapping a finger on her shoulder to get her attention.

Kokani felt a small tap on her shoulder, in response to the small but noticeable feeling she darted her head towards the thing that had caused it. Seeing a hooded figure wasn't a very welcoming sign for her, normally hooded figures would either be people requesting her to join a cult or other business she didn't want to get involved in so she naturally took it as a bad sign.

She pulled her dagger out and pinned the hooded figure close to the walls in the alleyway she had guessed they had came out from, her intimidating eyes aided her in looking like she didn't want any people approaching her right now. The position they were in obviously gave her the upper hand, her dagger at the figure's neck, her hand on his mouth and him facing the direction away from her, it looked as if she was the worse person here and ultimately she kind of was.

Kokani finally spoke after holding the stranger in the position for about 3 seconds "Whatever you want to discuss, I'm not interested in your cult nor am I interested in killing someone for money. If you're from a cult suggest you give your leader the message I'm not going to join any cult any time now." Her voice had sounded more cold an unwelcoming than the emotions she was conveying with Thiane in his shop, speaking like a trader trying to get a deal would wouldn't exactly help her in this situation.

Lance froze in terror as she pinned him against a wall. The last thing he’d been expecting was for her to attack him like this! His first emotion was raw fear - his heart lurched into his throat and thudded wildly. Was she going to kill him, right here, right now? She wouldn’t dare.

His second emotion was anger. How dare she? He was the prince! Maybe if he showed his face and let her know what a horrible thing she’d done, she would be repentant.

“Let go of me,” he hissed angrily. “I’m not here about some stupid cult, and certainly nothing so shady as asking you to assassinate someone! How dare you? My mission for you is far more important.” Still very cautious of her blade pressed against his neck, he moved carefully to remove his hood.

Once it was down, he stared at her over his shoulder with anger blazing in his eyes. “Step away,” he demanded.

Kokani's heart skipped a beat after hearing an all too familiar voice, after hearing him speak she had noticed some black locks were presented in front of her, notifying that the voiced stranger had taken his hood off. She turned her reflective dagger blade to see the one and only Prince Lance, the way he spoke also gave away his position almost immediately. Kokani took her dagger away and put it back into it's assigned holster, and took about 3 steps away from the person holding a far more important role than herself.

Kokani knelt down for a few seconds, her elbow on her kneecap. She spoke after some time kneeling down "I-I apologize for my behavior, i-it won't happen again, my Prince." Kokani said while keeping her head down, in this time her thoughts started to race, *'Why was the prince out of the castle? Why was he acting like as if he had not spoke her name, a better option in her opinion, and instead tapped her?'*. But the most important question entered her mind, why was the one and only Prince Lance looking for her?

He narrowed his eyes as she finally stepped away and bowed to him. Without another moment of hesitation, he hurriedly threw his hood up again, masking his face in shadow. He desperately hoped no one else had seen him.

“I should certainly hope it won’t happen again,” he grumbled quietly, eyes narrowed as he scanned the streets. “It’s too busy here. I need to speak with you in private about something very important.”

He was beginning to regret not bringing any guards along. Nobody knew he was outside of the castle - not even his father, the king. The ruler of the kingdom had insisted upon Lance staying in the castle while his guards searched for his kirin, but the prince didn’t like that idea.

It was his fault that the shoroko had gone missing. He hadn’t been paying close enough attention, and then… she was gone. He was the one who wanted to get her back. He didn’t want his guards to do everything for him while he twiddled his thumbs at home.

Kokani quickly got up after a pretty humiliating moment for her, being talked down to by a homeless person with a shoroko today was already a pretty degrading moment for her. She looked up to see the prince yet cloaked again in the blink of an eye, she understood that he had to hide his identity, but someone walking with one of THE lone souls was already a pretty suspicious act in commoner's eyes.

She looked at her prince after he had said his words, her face went into slight confusion, what was so important that he had to talk to her in a more private place than this? Her mind wandered off again, soon snapping back after she had remembered to respond to him "As you wish." She replied, her arms crossing as she shifted her weight onto her left foot though she was to follow him soon.

[[Ugh sorry the past few days have been super busy.....]]

Lance watched the crowds shuffle and move in the streets, his eyes narrowed and lips pursed. When the woman beside him spoke, he glanced to her with a sigh. "Follow me." With that, he set off through the alleyways, his cloak billowing behind him and his head down as he made sure to keep his face shrouded in shadow.

He wound through the alleyways for what felt like ages, treading further and further away from the bustling crowds and closer toward the wide-open farmlands at the city's borders, where all the citizens' crops were grown.

After a while, the prince stopped. He stood at the top of a hill that plunged down into vast, rolling green farmlands almost as far as the eye could see. In the far distance stood a thick forest, and beyond that, the blue silhouettes of mountains. Out here, there wasn't a soul to bother them. Lance looked over his shoulder at the huntress, and sighed.

"I've... brought you here for a very important reason. And what I tell you must be kept in utmost confidence. You cannot tell anyone about this at all. Do you understand me? No one can know."

(No problem and same here mate)

Kokani was slightly displeased with the dismissive answer she was given, "At least it was an answer." She thought as she began following the now cloaked prince she was supposed to follow. Her bangs flowed with the wind which made her auburn-like hair shower over her face, annoying her in the process.

Between weaving through alleyways for quite a while, she had tried to ignore all of her questioning thoughts that began swarming in. She had still been wondering about why the prince came to her and not someone with more experience than her, she was a little above average in her opinion. Once they had arrived at the farmlands, she observed the crops growing and the people attending to them, she was glad they had been focusing on their crops and not on herself since most of the time they did. But, after some time she looked away and focused on her objective.

Upon reaching the top of a hill, she took in a moment to see everything she had traveled through, the green plains that she had hunted her first rabbit, the forest that 11 year old Kokani dreamed about venturing in, and the mountains that she always looked at when travelling from place-to-place. She was captivated, almost everything she had looked at was something she had experienced herself, or had though about going to or had simply admired from a distance, it brought back memories she had enjoyed and wished to enjoy again.

All of those memories soon flickered away as soon as she felt as if someone was looking at her, the voice of that someone following shortly after. "I understand you completely, my liege. I'll be at your side for whatever journey you have for me." She paused "Now, what is this reason you have for me?" She questioned.

Lance stared out into the farmlands stretching on for miles, the silence surrounding him broken only by a gentle breeze. He sighed deeply and turned to look at the woman standing beside him, unsure of what to say. He’d brought her all the way out here, but… finding the courage to admit what had happened was difficult, to put it mildly.

Lips twisting into a frown, he nervously shifted his weight and pondered on what to say. “You… are a very skilled huntress, I’ve heard.” He flicked his eyes to her and then back out towards the growing fields. “I…”

Again he hesitated, unable to force the words out. He bit his lip so hard it almost bled, and made himself speak, the words all coming out in a jumbled rush. “I’ve lost my kirin. I want her back.”

Lance gritted his teeth hard. “It is a sign of incompetence to lose one’s shoroko, and I couldn’t be more devastated. Not to mention someone might want to try and harm me in this vulnerable time. No one can know about this.” He dropped his gaze to the ground beneath his leather boots.

(Yo I gotta go for like a month soon, but I'll try get another reply in before leaving lol since I'm not gonna have wifi there)

Kokani was a bit taken back hearing his words, but was also a bit angry at his choice of someone to hire. She was just being hired because she was the only known lone soul the prince could have known? The prince had just hired her to help him find his shoroko, because she herself had none? A scowl came to her face for a split second before her expression had turned to her resting face.

Kokani stood there for a bit, putting her weight onto her left foot after a bit, staring at her prince for a second. "I'll help you." She said, not really knowing what to say in the moment "I also won't tell anybody about this." She added on, though she knew she would probably have to kneel down and swear to him.

[[I’m so sorry. I’ve been sick for over two weeks and totally braindead, but I still have to do math class in spite of that and it’s been killing meee]]

Lance studied her closely as she responded, his orange eyes narrowed. He could trust her, couldn’t he? He certainly hoped so. He had nobody else to turn to. And he certainly couldn’t go looking for his lost kirin all on his own - he’d hardly ever been outside the castle, after all.

The prince breathed a long sigh and tried to tell himself to calm down. He had to trust this woman and hope she could aid him in his search for his shoroko.

“Thank you,” he said after a long pause, turning his head to gaze out into the distance. He hesitated for a moment and shifted his weight. “When and where should we begin our search? I need to know what - and how - I should prepare for our journey…"

(woah I just got back lol hi how are ya)

Kokani thought for a bit as she decided what to do internally, they could start in about a week since that would give the prince enough time to decide on what to bring. She placed her weight on her left leg as she thought, working with someone was a bit harder and out of her comfort zone, also with the fact that the prince was never seen outside the castle would also mean she would have to teach him some basic survival techniques on their search.

After about a good minute of thinking, she looked at the prince "We'll leave in about a week, and maybe we should start a bit far from the kingdom since around here it'd be a bit rough for a kirin to not be hunted for a black market trade. You should bring some things to support us, think about food and water since you're gonna have easier access to those kind of things." She said, thinking a bit before continuing "Bring anything else you can think of, just don't bring a lot since outside the kingdom has no room for horse carriages." She finished.

[[ I'm good, how are you? Sorry for this late reply, I've been really braindead due to math homework. :') ]]

As the woman before him paused to think about what he had said, Lance turned to survey the farmlands before him and the rolling wilderness beyond it, half hoping to see his beloved kirin galloping across the plains. Of course, he saw no such thing. She was long gone. Where could they even begin their search? He bit his lip.

Then Kokani broke the silence, and the prince turned to her with his lips forming a deep frown as she mentioned his kirin being sold on the black market. He did not like that idea one bit.

I’m coming to help you as soon as I can, he thought to himself, knowing that his kirin couldn’t hear that thought, but it made him feel moderately better anyway. Lance nodded idly as Kokani continued speaking. “I will bring only necessities,” he assured her. “Thank you for your aid."
