(I'm a bit new to posting in these threads so if I do something wrong or post something that should go somewhere else let me know and I'll try and fix it.)
This is a genetic mutation that can occurr during the first cell division of the fertilized egg, causing one of the cells produced to be male and the other to be female. The result is a peculiar animal whose entire one side is female while the other side is male. Though it's mostly been observed in insects and some birds, it is believed to be able to occur in any animal. So like when they've reach adult hood or Adolescent they have only half a mane. Breeding can vary(some can't breed, others have more female parts, so they can still breed like that and some have more make parts so they can also breed) and there isn't much information about it. It's a bit strange and would be hard to explain so I wouldn't mind if you decide not to use it.

This is actually very interesting- I have to say, a unique idea. Here's some pictures if anyone is wondering

A butterfly - https://www.sunnyskyz.com/uploads/2016/05/f21mf-butterfly-1.jpg

Cardinal- females are a dull brown, whereas males have a lovely bright red coloration https://img.purch.com/w/660/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5saXZlc2NpZW5jZS5jb20vaW1hZ2VzL2kvMDAwLzEwNC80MTcvb3JpZ2luYWwvY2FyZGluYWwuanBn

It'd have to be when the creature is between 8-64 cells, however, rather when the zygote first divides. It can occur in humans and other mammals, though it's more commonly known as "Ambiguous Genitalia", where they have either both internal reproductive organs- both ovaries and testes- or both external genitalia- both a penis and a vagina. Some people who have it live perfectly normal lives, while others are considered infertile/sterile. Have an article!

It can happen in cats, too- it's just that the genitals have an 'abnormal appearance', or the cat is just completely infertile/sterile. One example would be tortie toms, which should be impossible- except for when it comes to ambiguous genetalia. This also explains why male torts can't produce offspring of their own, and if they can, it's very rare. Have another article- this time about cats!

I highly recommend you read these articles! They're interesting and explain a lot.

Granted that the mutation takes place with the XY chromosomes and hormones and isn't a species or breed-specific trait, I would love to see this implemented into the game somehow :-)

Edit: I'm talking to my biology teacher about this, because I think this is really interesting!
