Hi, I'm Chicken Woman, but I also go by Gam. I own a candycorn polish breeding pair, named Ziggy and Hoggle. Hoggle just started laying eggs today! I'm hoping to collect them and try hatching them. I also own 2 cochins, 3 duccles, 4 silkies, 1 dwarfed leghorn named Goose, and 10 baby chicks! 0 players like this post! Like? |

Hello! I am Constellation, and I have two chickens, a gold-laced wyandotte and I'm not quite sure what the other is. We raised them from chicks with a borrowed broody hen, and I love them both very much. I joined this clan because birds are amazing, and I wanted to chat to a bunch of people more knowledgeable than I am ever likely to be 0 players like this post! Like? |

Oh, that's so cool! I get almost all of my chook information from this one book, currently lying under my bed (whoops) and a fair bit of googling. Totally random, but Copper, the wyandotte, just started molting and where I live, we're going into the coldest days of winter. The daft hen is still really patchy and I don't want her to freeze or anything, do you have suggestions on what I should do? 0 players like this post! Like? |

Oh you must be in the southern hemisphere! I did a stupid and forgot the seasons there are flipped for a minute and got SO confused Man, hens are SO dumb. I have to manually put one of mine in the coop every night. She's not disabled or anything, she's just lazy. Do you have a heating lamp? You could set one up in the coop, or better yet set up a brooder type area in your garage with a heatlamp for her. Less of a firehazard the latter way, in my opinion. Ive even set up chickens in my guest bathroom on extremely cold nights. I'll lay down towels, puppy pads, and another layer of towels followed by a layer of shavings. That way their huge poopy mess is easier to clean up. The bathroom way you don't even need a heating lamp, your biggest concern there is the poop. If your coop is well insulated with a thick layer of shavings, she might be able to stay warm enough on her own, depending on cold it is where yall are. But on blizzardish nights, I'd really suggest the bathroom or brooder method. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Oh no. I went to get my juvenile feed, and roaches invaded it without me knowing. They were so big. It was so scary. I guess my new juvies can eat chick feed tonight. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Oh no! Bugs in the feed are so scary :( For a few weeks, we had a spider making webs across the door to the coop and every time I'd forget and run into it. Yep, Southern Hemisphere (makes reading Harry Potter very confusing) so no blizzards 'round here since the last ice age. The two girls snug together at nights, in a pretty confined space, so it's more early mornings than anything else. As of now, I think she's at the later end, so she'll be fine eventually. You, on the other hand, need some bug killer :) 0 players like this post! Like? |

Oh yeah if there's no blizzards or heavy snow, she can keep herself warm! If she's got hen friends, I bet they'll snuggle together. Just give them a thicker layer of fresh pine shavings (if that's what you use) to add extra insulation. I threw the bag outside and ordered a 3 pack of raid on amazon!! I HATE roaches. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Hey everyone! I'm Sauti, but please feel free to refer to me as my current king's name, Thunder. Me and my family own four hens who we affectionately refer to as the 'Raptor Squad'. There's Charlie the Rhode Rock, Delta the Warren, Echo the Maran, and then Blue the absolutely humungous bluebell. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Yeah, relating to that, we're having a bit of trouble with Charlie atm. She's displaying symptoms of gapeworm but after checking multiple times we've found no trace of them. The gasping has calmed down over the past few weeks but it's got us completely dumbfounded. Anybody have any idea what it could be? 0 players like this post! Like? |

Two of mine were doing that, and it ended up being a respiratory infection. They ended up getting oxytetracycline shots, I think. The breeder I got my birds from is awesome and does free vet care for them So you might want to check and see if she's wheezing, lethargic, with a gloopy nose or eyes. Other than that, I'm stumped! I've had birds get the strangest illnesses. Do let us know if you figure it out. 0 players like this post! Like? |
