It could be that your king died while you were away and you had to reroll a new king when you came back because you had no other males in your pride. You can reroll him again for a GC cost. You could also rename him and/or customize him, also for GC. But the cheapest way to start over is to make do with what you have for now until you can sell off your current lions and buy new ones. You can buy a male you like from TC and make him your new king as soon as your current king dies or is able to be retired for a price you can afford.

You can see a lioness's personality category by her pose. That's on the wiki. Here's a rough guide I use for claiming:
For Good/Kind girls - Purr, Shake, Puff, Rub Head
For Neutral girls - Roar, Shake, Puff, Bite Neck
For Snarky/Evil girls - Snarl, Shake, Puff, Bite Neck

If it's clear that she doesn't like me, I slap her, which converts the claim to a battle. That way, I don't leave behind EXP I could gain from beating her up and the encounter isn't wasted.

Thank you! I will work on that; what do you suggest is the best way to make SB?
Can kings die if they haven't been rolled over in a long while? Or was he killed so that another player could have his name? Since coming back, I had a very hard time naming my new king. If I retired him and promoted a submale, would I have to rename him if it's something already chosen by another player?

Sorry for all the questions, I have a hard time finding specific things in the FAQ or when using Google for this site.

I restarted yesterday actually. What I did was keep the kings, no point in changing them at this point anyway, and just chase off all the lionesses and started fresh by claiming NCLs in explore. I also went into the TC to look for males I felt could be a decent heir if I fail to produce something better myself and bought one. Basically I'm starting from the ground up, gathering items/toys/food/SB/event currency in explore and just stock piling. Also doing the event stuff as well so I can get more of the currency which I'll then use on the last day to buy in demand event items which I'll keep and sell later on when their price goes up. This will then fund me for my dream king - a natural looking tigon. I know not everyone will want to do this but it is one way to go about starting again :)

I sold the few lionesses I had, and am working on getting a pretty male cub/adolescent from the TC for a new king. I'm not sure if I want to wait for retirement or not. I've sold most of my toys in hopes I'll get plenty of SB either to buy a future king or to trade for GB for when I can change them, or reroll/customize my current king. I have quite a bit of food, but I'm also terrified of running out of it due to having only two lionesses currently. i just birthed a really cute cub, and have a cub from I think previous litters I like, so I am going to keep those two and chase off the nursing mother after she weans the cub.

I didn't really have the hang of things when I first started a year or more ago, and so had quit after a while as I didn't know what I was doing or really how to navigate the site. I couldn't find the help guides I needed. I would play this more for casual fun/collecting than a serious "gotta grind for the best."

I am having an easier time on Wolvden. I think some of the mechanics are different than here, and it's just easier for me to complete quests, befriend/claim members to sell or keep, and hunt for food. I want to try and do well on both, but this one just seems so much more difficult.

In theory, lions aren't supposed to age if you don't roll over your account. But in practice, it sometimes happens anyway. I've heard stories from other players who found all their lions dead or run away when they returned from a hiatus.

The name thing is always inconvenient, but there are ways around it. If you have a name you want to use, try searching for a king named that in the Search function. If one turns up, try adding a - or whatever your favorite non-letter symbol is. That should help you get the name you want, with a little change. When you switch kings, you can use the same name, or a different one.

To collect SB, you can play mini-games, sell NCLs you collect in Explore, sell items you don't need, and do daily snake quests. That's how I make all my SB. Once you have a lot of SB, you can trade it for GB in the Oasis.

To carry on from what spotpc has said and your frustrations over naming your king, here is my suggestion:

I put Alpha infront of my king's name which gives me a lot more freedom in naming. You could do the same and use Alpha or put King instead. I thought it was a good tip when it was given to me.

I have been out of it for a while but if you have questions you could PM me. I still remember a lot about the game, its just the events/colours/markings/mutations etc that have appeared since I left that I won't be able to help you with.

That's a good idea for king naming.

The games are difficult for me, but I suppose I'll get better if I practice.

I've never been good at claiming lionesses, though I've looked at a few guides. Their temper flares faster than I can figure out their preferred interactions.

To be honest I just click random actions. If one of them happens to do well then I try to repeat the same kind of action - for example if snarl works well then I would go onto Growl and Bite Neck. It doesn't always work, as I said I do it all randomly, and some lionesses like a mix of actions I think but I just stick with that. At least there is a chance anyway. As long as you aren't fussed by what you want/get in an NCL you can get quite a few anyway with time. Its just patience a lot of the time I think XD

I try to do what I think her personality prefers, but I couldn't ever find a legit guide. I found a Lioden wiki but it seems 99% of the pages I need/want to look at aren't available.

Is the actions in a specific order or just the ones they like? I've got it narrowed down to evil/snarky prefer the bite and snarl, and the good/kind like purr and rub head, but I couldn't get beyond that. Thank you for the guide!
