I noticed that the Cub stage of certain bases have those dark rosette-like patterns on them.

Here is the Cream base on a cub without the lineart:

The patterns disappear in the Adolescent stage though:

Only certain common bases have this feature. Does anyone know why that is? I think this was due to an abandoned art choice that only shows up on the oldest bases on Lioden, but I am not sure if there is more to it.

^Chocolate, another Common base, does not show spots on cubs.

If the cub spots are an outdated aesthetic and not tied to other features (like the generation of actual Rosettes), I wonder how people feel about a suggestion to remove the marks from the cubs for consistency. The black-ish marks make the bases look kinda smudgy to me.

Yes you're correct; this is just down to the age of the base, there's no other meaning to it. It was changed quite a few years back now - I believe to neaten bases up and prevent confusion with actual markings - so only the bases added when the game was very new have those marks for cubs. I guess there's relatively little interest these days in those old bases since they tend to be the very plain colours, so it may not have seemed worth the time to go back and change them retrospectively.

I feel like I used to have the original news post about it (with explanation etc) bookmarked, but I can't find it now unfortunately. Anyway, short answer is it's just a leftover from when the game was very new, no other significance :)

Thanks for the answer! That makes a lot of sense haha. I am glad they chose to remove the cub spots because the bases look a lot better this way.
