I think that as long as you pay for it, you can have unlimited territory. As of right now I currently have 80 territory but I know some players have a good bit more than me.

I know but I mean not having to pay bc I love all my lions, but then I find cuter ones but I cant pay for more territory so I cant get them, I even almost got a dwarf (my fave mut) once but they gave to someone else bc I had full teritory

No support. You are clearly new player and don't probably know this, but you can get up to 40 free territory slots for free by battling. The link above, which goes to our official wiki (I recommend checking it out with time), tells you how to get more territory.

I have paid for my total of 200 slots (100 on both accounts each), so I have paid for 120 slots. Getting them free (over the 40 limit) has never been an option in the last over 10 years of the game and I hope it never will (and it will most likely never be), since me and a lot of other players have paid a lot of money, grinded in game and real money, to get where they are today.

A major part of there being a limit on the amount of lions players can have is so the game's servers can actually hold all of their data. LD's servers physically could not manage an infinite amount of lions without having to compensate in a lot of other directions. Higher costs towards running and maintaining larger servers means GB prices would go up, more aspects of the game would be locked behind paywalls, the quality of other site features would decrease to cut down on file size, customization options would be much scarcer. The game would look and feel incredibly different, likely not in a good way. 40 unpaid territory slots is a fine balance currently, I think. No support^

I think this defeats the purpose of natural progression and many players would quickly get overwhelmed when underestimating how difficult it is to upkeep a large pride. It feels to me like this would bring more harm than good when it comes to frustration.

Although I love my lions, and want to keep all of them, having unlimited territory can cause a lot of problems. The bigger the pride, the bigger the food supply needs to be for that pride. It also, as @heartbroken said, can be very costly on server space. And it’s already a pain to individually feed and play with 50 lions. (I don’t buy the feed all play all subscription, even though I have the budget for it) New players might be able to handle this for a day or two, but once they get too many lions, they may end up quitting.
