Valdis wasn't particularly loved by her pride.

Now, don't misunderstand, she was easily the king's favorite. He loved her for everything she was: the strongest cub ever born in the pride, and undoubtedly one of the most attractive lionesses he had seen in his life. He gave her flowers, jewelery, even a pet bird and a secluded grove filled with pleasant-smelling herbs and flowering trees to have as her own personal territory within the pride's land. She was given only the best food that the huntresses brought back, and was given the most satisfying when destroyed toys to amuse herself with. Most of Archonei's time was spent with her, grooming her and giving her gifts and sweet words.

However, all the attention and pampering was exactly what drew the ire of her pride mates. Before Valdis was born, Archonei split his time evenly among his pride members, making sure that no one would be ignored and everyone would feel equally worthy of his time. Now, with Valdis around, the other lionesses in the pride rarely saw the king outside from when he gave announcements to the pride, and when he was away from his new love, he did not show the other members of the pride the same kindness that he showed Valdis.

Valdis, spending most of her time either hunting or relaxing in the herb grove, was somewhat oblivious to how the rest of the pride felt about her. Sure, she noticed the glares sent her way and the short words given to her when she spoke to another lioness, but she always attributed it to the normal attitude of the pride. From what she had seen of her pride mates, most of them were quick to anger and quick to lash out at anyone unlucky enough to be around them while they were in one of their moods. It's not like such behavior was surprising, either. From the stories Takatalvi had told her, the pride had always been a bit vicious. While neither lioness had been around for previous generations, Valdis trusted what Takatalvi told her. The other lioness was known as a scribe and a storyteller, and was also the only other lioness to show kindness to her.

Still, only time will tell how well Valdis will be treated by her pride mates. The lioness is still very young and naive, and while she will certainly grow to become stronger and more feared than the others, she would be outnumbered if a conflict were to occur and Archonei will not be around to protect her forever.
