With eyes that could pierce the veil separating the living and the spirit realms, it was no surprise that the pride's shaman took interest to the young Aequus. From the time she was a cub, the lioness was dragged by the shaman back and forth between the den and a nearby human village. While she had been hesitant at first, remembering the stories of humans her mother had told her, she soon came to be quite familiar with the village's human shaman. He and the shaman of her pride must've had some sort of connection, she figured from the way neither of them shied from the other. Eventually, she began to willingly go with the older lion to the village, and she, too, became relaxed around the humans there.

When Aequus reached adolescence, the human shaman decorated her body with paint and feathers, and to top it all off, he placed the crest of a zebra down along her back. She wore the decorations proudly and beautifully. Even when others demanded she remove the items, claiming that she was a traitor if she accepted a human's gifts, she refused. The items served as memories of the kind human shaman she had befriended from a young age, and there was no way she'd ever let anyone take such a precious thing from her.

One day, after she was fully grown, Aequus returned to the village to meet her great friend. The shaman of her pride had long since passed away, leaving her with the human as her only companion. However, when she arrived to the village, she found nothing but bodies and the bloody pawprints of man-eating lions. The shaman was gone, and she was completely alone. Heartbroken, she returned to the pride's den, only to be stopped by a Cape Fox cub. At first, she shooed the tiny creature away. Only when the cub ran between her paws and nearly tripped her did she really look at it. And in those big, brown eyes, she saw the human shaman.
