Dejen was born to Risala and a male from a different pride. When he was old enough to understand his parentage, he asked his mother why Commander had not fathered him.
"Commander has a mate, our Queen Sunstreak. He still wanted me to have cubs though, so he arranged for me to go to another king. That king was kind and strong, and he had bright red eyes."

"Which is why I have red eyes too!" Dejen piped up.

"Me too!" yelled his sister Kiri.

"Your eyes are orange, silly!" Dejen replied. Kiri gave a playful growl and bowled Dejen over, and the two tussled on the mossy floor of the main den.

Dejen grew into a fine young male, and Commander allowed him to stay in the pride. Dejen gave his oaths to protect and provide for the pride, and to be a faithful servant to his king and all of his king's descendants. Dejen knew the full implications of the words he swore. He would never live to be a king, never take a mate, never father his own cubs. Yet being a subordinate male in Commander's pride was rewarding. He did most of the patrolling and border protection, and the lionesses shared their kills with him. He had companionship and friendship that could not have been possible as a rogue.

After Commander's sons were born, Dejen knew he'd soon be called upon to train them. He didn't know which of the three sons would be chosen to be heir, but Dejen would treat them all equally until an heir was named. Even as months old cubs, Commander was starting to ask Dejen to teach them basic skills...
