Astra wasn’t always blind. As a cub, she was as healthy as any other cub and perfectly able to see. Her sight was lost due to the grave mistakes of perhaps her entire birth pride. The lions had gotten to close to a herd of buffalo who felt threatened by the closeness of her pride. Astra made the mistake of getting too close while her mother and the other lionesses weren’t paying attention and she paid the price. They took her to safety but it was quickly decided that she wasn’t likely to make it. Her pride left her for dead but she was found by Isadora and the rest of the Queen’s warriors during a hunt. With the help of a healer called Lurin, they managed to save Astra’s life but she was left blind from the attack. Echosong of the Solar court offered to raise Astra as one of her own, as a sister to Tzuyu and the cubs quickly grew close. Getting used to her blindness was difficult for her at first, but Astra hardly remembers the time she could see. She’d been less than a month old when the attack had happened so adjusting was made a bit easier since she was too young to rely on her sight as much as the older lions did.

Lurin stayed with the pride as a sub-male and healer while Astra grew up to keep an eye on her and realized that Astra’s interest in healing would make her a good healer as well. He decided to become a part of the pride for a few years to train Astra to become a healer as well. At the age of 4, Astra has completed her training and even with her blindness, she can feel, smell, and even taste the herbs to differentiate between them. She’s become a very skillful healer, one who the pride has begun to rely on.
