Lily of the Deep Valley
Lily hid behind a rock, her haunches up and ready to pounce. An unsuspecting Echocub was chasing a mouse, failing miserably but still trying. She waited until the best best moment and— a lioness picked her up by the scruff of her neck.
“Stop harassing the cubs, Lily.” Pinkeyes said gently, setting her down beneath a tree. Her white fur glimmered slightly in the darkening sky. “You know they can’t compete with your experience.”
“Spoilsport.” Lily grouched. “But fine.” It was true, for she was years older than any of the other cubs. When she was young, she’d been cursed to stay a cub forever. She didn’t mind much, though. It was more fun than being an adult. She couldn’t stand responsibilities.

The tiny lioness sat under a short acacia tree, grooming herself. Apparently she was old enough to groom herself. Her tail thumped the warm earth as she dragged her tongue over her silky pink fur. Just as she finished, a lioness approached her. Hallows Eve, a fiery redfur, who always treated her like a cub, without care of the fact that she was years older than her. Eve purred at her, picking her up to go back to the cave.
“Hey, Eve!” Lily said. The lioness smiled at her. Eve continued to purr until she set her down.
“Hey, sweet.” She cooed, stroking her with her tail. “How are you doing?”
“Well, today I tried to catch Echo, but Pinkeyes stopped me.” Lily explained eagerly. “So I went over and pounced on Aloe instead! He was more fun. I even let him win once!”
“Aww, you’re so nice!” Hallows Eve praised.
“So then, I played with Dawnflower’s tail until she got annoyed, and then I made her chase me around the whole savanna!” Eve giggled softy.
“Oh wow! Did she catch you?” She asked.
“Nope! She just got super mad and went back to the den. So I was like, okay fine, and played with Poppyfen, until she told me to go groom myself because my fur was getting matted.” Lily pranced around Eve, absentmindedly chasing a fly.
“Seems like your fur is much cleaner now.” Poppyfern said, coming out of the shadows. “It’s your bedtime soon.”
“Oh, come on!” Lily complained. “I’m literally older than you!”
“You still have to sleep, Lily.” Poppyfern admonished. “Your body needs it. And besides, the king still thinks there’s a way to get you to grow, so you have to be healthy and fit enough to get bigger.”
“Rrrgh. Fine.” Lily said, and followed her into the cave. “Bye Eve!”
“See you tomorrow, Lily of the Deep Valley.”
