He despises the king, but he doesn't dare to make a move against him; the pride will need his strength soon enough, and he fears the annihilation of the pride more than anything else. He has sworn an oath to protect them, even if he can't be their king, and he will do that by quietly helping unwanted cubs find new homes in other prides.
