Bakekujira, or 化鯨, are a Japanese yōkai, a class of supernatural entity in Japanese folklore. Bakekujira is composed of the kanji with the relative meaning of transform or change being 化 (bake) as well as the kanji for whale which is 鯨 (kujira). Despite the name suggesting otherwise, there is no transformation at play for bakekujira. Instead, the bakekujira is a skeleton whale, often said to the be the spirits of whales killed off the shores of Japan. These spirits float near the top of the water, most commonly spotted off the coasts of whaling villages in Japan. It is said that once a bakekujira has been spotted, the sailors to have set eyes on it carry a curse with them back to their homes, where famine, illness, and misfortune will reign as a result.
