It is planned that, when he takes over as king, the pride will make use of their connections with other prides to produce cubs. This is not only because Adina is related to many of the pride's lionesses, but also for his own comfort as he is attracted to male lions rather than lionesses.
However, when he is still an adolescent being trained by his grandmother, trouble finds the pride in the form of a band of desert-dwelling lions.
The strangers have a rather unhealthy mindset towards mutations, believing mutated lions to be superior over their normal kin; this is caused by their having lived in isolation for generations and sending representatives to exchange mutation-boosting items, mainly cotton root bark, for food that simply isn't available in the desert. The knowledge that other prides would give up meat - which all lions need in order to live - for a chance at mutated cubs led the desert-dwellers to believe that lions with a mutation are somehow better than those without. As such, they go to extreme lengths to bring mutated lions into their tiny pride, which rarely has more than a dozen members at a time. Their methods include cannibalism (the victims of this are mainly loners passing through the desert); kidnapping (if a passerby is "fortunate" enough to have a mutation, they are taken in as a "guest", and simply not allowed to leave - after a while, they usually succumb to the pride's ideology, but if they prove troublesome, it's Back To Cannibalism); and inbreeding (this method has yielded few viable results, but the lions' rudimentary understanding of genetics indicates that cubs with closely related parents are likely to be born with health issues, and they believe that this could include mutations... However, all they have achieved so far is sickly offspring that rarely survive for more than a few weeks).
Adara's trusted submale, an upbeat Achromatic named Lunic, stumbled across the desert-dwellers while seeking out a suitable territory for his pride to move to - for the desert has been encroaching on Adara's territory for years, and her land is now equal parts savannah and desert. The lions aren't used to the harsh arid environment, and Adara is desperate to find a new patch of savannah for her family. As such, Lunic strikes out across the desert to see what awaits on the far side, several weeks' travel away.
Upon coming across a very friendly, if worryingly thin, pride who had made their home in an abandoned temple, Lunic is happy to rest and chat with them. The leader, a male bearing a patches mutation, was very interested in hearing about Lunic's pride. His eyes shone as the Achromatic male rambled about his friends and family, several dozen of whom were mutated, and his tail twitched excitedly when he learned that the majority of those lions had Piebaldism, a passable mutation inherited from Queen Adara.
