Jareth is the firstborn son of King Matūmaini, and as such, has a rather high opinion of himself. Since he is not the son of the Queen (Matu hadn’t chosen one at the time), he is not in line to be king. But, as Jareth is fond of pointing out, he IS the best option currently. He is bold but tactless, and rather vain, earning him the unflattering nickname ‘the goblin prince’, or sometimes, ‘the royal goblin’.
Jareth is Raja’s only cub in her first litter, and is spoiled often by his mother. He is VERY like another Prince, one who still lives on in stories: Wema, son of Brond, Prince of the Kalahari and King of the Hidden Valley Pride. He is Jareth’s personal hero.
As an adult, and with many younger brothers competing with him for succession, Jareth serves as a border guard and the resident adult of the training den. He doesn’t mind it, and training the youngsters does give him some of the respect and adoration he craves, so it’s fine. But, he always keeps an eye out for a promising position in another Pride. Someday, he’s sure, someone will see him as the wonder he is.
…
He never, never expected it to be Isiyo, his baby brother, the legal heir to the throne. When Matūmaini retires and passes the throne to Isiyo, the new king immediately calls on his two older brothers, Jareth and Shiro, to help him rule. Isiyo has been taught diplomacy and ethics, the proper protocol for war time and peace time, and he learned it all diligently, but when faced with the actual throne, he is hesitant. He is only four, barely an adult, still growing. He appoints Shiro as his Captain of the Guard, and General, in times of war, and to Jareth he gives and even greater honor: Jareth is to be his Royal Advisor, his Right Paw, his trusted friend.
Jareth is really rather impressed with the kid’s political savvy, he’s taken his two biggest rivals for the throne and turned them into assets for his kingdom. He humbly (for the the first time in his life) accepts his new position, and defends his brother’s rule. It seems, in the end, his father chose the right heir after all. One sho puts the kingdom first, and rules with generosity and kindness.
