During the very beginning of the rabies epidemic, Labradorescence was far too busy fighting off savage beasts, almighty angels and destructive demons to spend much time at his pride. Unfortunately, old age was quickly catching up to the felis, and his bony frame was becoming more and more difficult to distinguish from the zombified creatures that awoke at night. More than once, he had spooked his lionesses as he lumbered back into their resting place, swaying and hoarsely yawning from the exhaustion of the exploration. Radha, Labradorescence's best friend and a pride member known to have accurate predictions of the future, told him that he would find his heir, and he would find it soon.

Just as she said, only about a month later, Labradorescence chased a pack of rabid hyenas away from the ravaged carcass of a young lioness. Just as he was about to lower her corpse into a grave he had dug for her to keep her remains away from the diseased beasts, a tiny squeak alerted him to the presence of a young cub, one that's short tail and large canines proved an unusual heritage. Labradorescence saw himself in the young cub's terrified eyes, and he cut his adventures short to bring the cub to his pride. The cub was placed in the care of the pride's gentlest broodmother, Ndidi, and a single glance between Radha and Labradorescence was enough to inform the old king that he'd be spending the last few years of his life training this young cub to succeed his place as king.
