Ampelos was a beautiful young boy who became one of Dionysus’ favorite lovers The moment Dionysus saw him, he was entrapped by his beauty, grace, and kind spirit. Dionysus gave him the choice to be loved by him, to which Ampelos agreed The two bonded instantly, and spent as much time as they could together in the fields, rivers, and sacred lands. However one day, when the two were picking fruits, Ampelos had climbed too high on a ladder to reach a few grapes. As he climbed higher, his foot slipped from under him, sending him to the ground where he was instantly killed. Since Dionysus had no healing abilities, nor the power to bring his lover back to life, he cried from the devastation since he could do nothing. He was so distraught, that he transformed Ampelos’ body into the first grape vine, and made wine from his blood. He then lifted Ampelos’ soul to the stars where he was turned into the Vindermitor constellation where their love would live forever with the gods.
