The Lion of the North Wind is a quiet one. She has many names born of legend and superstition, though if you speak to her, she only introduces herself as Flickerdust. She keeps to herself, ruling the Clan with words more than actions, though rumor of her great power has (so far) ensured peace for the Clan.
But the Clan was not always peaceful. The previous monarch, Foxtrot, was a power-hungry tyrant with bloodstained paws. They held the throne for many years, killing any who did not bow to them. As the story goes: one unseasonably cold day, some of the Clan's lionesses were hunting when they saw a white lion in the distance. But the lion had disappeared when they went to investigate. The lionesses reported back to their monarch, and Foxtrot flew into a rage, furious that a trespasser dared to set foot on their lands.
Foxtrot scoured the territory, searching for the white lion. As they did so, heavy clouds rolled in, obscuring the moon and stars. It grew colder still, and a frigid wind chilled the air. But Foxtrot would not let darkness and cold air stop them. They had just picked up a fresh scent trail when snow began to fall; first a couple flakes, then a steady snowstorm, and finally a howling blizzard. Still Foxtrot did not relent in their search. All night, the Clan waited for news from their monarch, cuddled together in their dens to keep warm. But Foxtrot did not return.
In the morning, the storm had abated. Though it was still freezing and snow covered the territory, the sky was clear. The Clan sent out search parties; some worried for their monarch, others secretly hoping that they might be rid of the tyrant. It took hours, but finally their search ended at the far edge of the territory.
Foxtrot stood frozen solid in a snowdrift, a snarl on their lips, and before him sat the white lion from before... up close, actually a white-speckled lioness. She smiled at the Clan, and they hailed her as their new queen. While nobody was certain whether Flickerdust held any special power, they could all agree that she was a fine leader. It was good to be free of the dark reign that had controlled them for so long.
