Regandi means ‘to govern’.
Regandi has always felt the pull of destiny more strongly than other lions, on multiple occasions he has known things before they happened, and his intuition is scarily accurate. He isn’t overly social, but cares deeply for his pridemates. He doesn’t start fights, but usually wins them. He is regarded as a bit strange within the pride, perhaps a descendant of a seer, or shaman.
Regandi is one of Rego’s three protégés, along with Selenus and Falling Spark. He and Selenus get along very well, and often train together. The three young males are all expected to become royal guards as adults. One day, out of the blue, Regandi goes to Rego, bows his head, and asks for his blessing to leave the pride. Rego is shocked, everyone is, Regandi had never shown any interest in going rogue. But, Rego would never deny him permission to move on, so he gives him his blessing and wishes him well. Regandi leaves that night. But to where?
When he reappears it as King of the Hidden Valley Pride. He had crossed the border and challenged old King Wema, and won. The pride was hesitant to accept him, especially Prince Iliyopambwa, who had seen the terrors usurpers could bring. Iliyopambwa rallied the guard to put down the false king and protect the pride, but Wema stopped him.
To the surprise of everyone, Wema spoke for Regandi, saying the young lion had fought well and beaten him fairly, he was well within his rights to claim the pride. What’s more, Regandi had shown no trace of cruelty, treating Wema as a respected elder, and swearing to protect all members of the pride, even the cubs of the previous king.
‘Hail, Regandi, King of the Hidden Valley, ruler by Right of Conquest.’ Wema proclaimed, and the pride echoed him. They had a new king.
Regandi is a good king: patient, intelligent, and bold in action. He does have a LOT of cubs, however. Pretty rapidly too, he’s the cause of a massive baby boom in the Hidden Valley Pride. Don’t let him fool you, he’s not a womanizer OR a man whore, there’s a method to his madness. Anele, the shaman of the Kalahari Pride, told him that his heir, the ‘King of All Beasts’ she called him, MUST have his mane mutation. So, Regandi is trying very hard to pass on his genes. (Not that he’s complaining)
Lessa, his Queen, manages to put a stop to that nonsense: the pride was growing much too fast, rapidly outgrowing its resources. Regandi is rather embarrassed when she phrases it like that. Lessa wins his heart almost immediately with her clever mind and kind heart. He is a MUCH better king with her reigning beside him.
~You heard last night that Regandi cleared some fallen branches and brush from a path near the den. Now the lionesses can drag prey back easier! Nice!
