Deimos was born in a faraway pride. Even as a cub, he was incredibly hyperactive; this led him to run away from his home and into Callan's territory. Normally, the ruthless king would have slain any cubs foolish enough to stray so far from home. But Deimos was not like other cubs, his primal nature was obvious in his appearance and character. The young cub stood his ground, refusing to backdown in the face of an old and experienced male like Callan. Luckily for Deimos, Callan was impressed by the young lion's boldness and offered him a place in his pride. This offer did not come free of course, Deimos was expected to earn his place by slaying Callan's heir at the time.
Deimos' primal nature meant that he didn't have to wait until he came of age to fight the young sub-male, Katai. If Katai had not been so good-natured, he may have stood a chance. This success meant that Deimos could finally take his place as heir and prince, alongside Prince Oryin II. He and his fellow prince have always had a strained relationship, as Oryin has been bitter ever since he was originally replaced as heir by Katai. Oryin does prefer Deimos to his previous replacement though, since they usually had a good time on patrol together and they both love to tussle.
After a few years, Callan grew too old and unstable to be an effective king. Despite his reluctance, he knew he could trust Deimos to take charge of the more physically demanding aspects of being king. Of course, Callan would still hold great power in his position as Grandpaw; ruling over the more mundane aspects of being king. The pride generally approved of this change in leadership, as many had grown tired of Callan's harsh rule. Deimos reveled in his new position of power, often going out on long expeditions to make alliances with other prides and meet new creatures.
During one of his outings, he ran into Cephalus; the Puppet King, who ruled in name only under Callan's watchful eye. Deimos had not seen the other king in years, but he had expected to recognize the plain looking young lion who had foolishly come to Callan looking for friendship. Cephalus had encountered a strange cave during one of his own expeditions and underwent a dramatic transformation that rendered him unrecognizable to Deimos. This encounter led to something of an understanding between the two rulers, which was much more amicable than Cephalus' relationship with Callan.
When Callan died, Deimos knew he had to be more present in his duties to be a good king. He ensured the pride did not go hungry, even in the dry seasons, by expanding the territory and helping hunt while he explored. Though Callan had viewed hunting as a task for the lionesses, Deimos found it to be entertaining and good exercise. Deimos also reinforced his bond with Prince Oryin, by giving him more power and ensuring that he could take the younger male's place if anything were to happen to him. Though Deimos has retained most of his predecessor's laws, and continues to show favoritism towards mutated lions, he has changed enough to make life better for the cubs and lionesses under his rule.
