Arshaka's Den
Welcome to Arshaka's pride!
The Mara, meaning "spotted" in the Maasai language, earns its name through the trees and shrubs that spot its flatlands. The Mara river and the lush grasses that grow in its floodplain attract massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, and antelope, and multiple species of birds thrive off the scattered thickets of thorny brush and acacias. The abundance of game attracts nearly every African predator from the tiny civet to the massive crocodile. The lions—especially those of Arshaka's pride—keep the terrestrial ones in check. During the long dry season, they hunt the migrating herds and fight off leopards, hyenas, wild dogs, and cheetahs. During the brief wet season when riverlets stripe the grassland and turn it into marsh, they sometimes retreat to the hills, hunting in the damp but not-as-flooded miombo woodland.
