Zegai's Den
Deep within the savanah on a cloudless night, a lone lioness who had been chased from her pride bore two cubs. The firstborn she named Zegai. The secondborn she named Azreil.
The two cubs grew quickly in strength and size. Their mother did her best to protect them and supply them with plenty of milk and, later, meat. It was a difficult life.
Food dwindling, the mother lioness gave every scrap of edible material she found to her two cubs. They watched on helplessly as she grew more gaunt day-by-day. Finally, on a night clear as the night she bore her litter, she died.
The two brothers were stricken with terrible grief and sat by her body all night. When the first rays of the sun broke over the horizon and the vultures began to circle overhead, Zegai stood. It was time to go, to leave their mother in peace.
Azreil snarled at his brother. He did not understand how Zegai could just leave the lioness who had given them so much, who had died for them. He and Zegai argued visciously, vultures swooping closer and closer. Enraged and distraught, Azreil swiped at Zegai, his claws grazing the elder lion's eyes. Zegai was left hard of sight.
Unwilling to fight his brother, Zegai turned and ran, giving one final warning to Azreil.
"Do not let this overtake you brother. Mother would not have wanted this."
He wandered for the better part of the day, the scorching sun beating down on the heartbroken lion, barely older than a cub. Finally, he collapsed in the shade of an old Baobab tree, exhausted.
Zegai felt something then, a nudge to his fur, a soft lick encouraging him. Do not give up, a voice whispered, it will be alright. He slept soundly, feeling his mother protecting him through the long night.
Upon awaking, Zegai discovered the Baobab was situated by a gleaming waterhole. Hope lifted within him anew. His mother had guided him here. From then on, he would honor the memory of his kind mother in every action he took.
And so the Pride of Zegai was founded.
