Sijui's Den

A long, long time ago, mothers used to warn their cubs about the rocky lands near the northeastern rocky hills of Lioden. In the farthest reach of these rocky hills, the uneven landscape spikes up into steep spires, often called the 'Pembe Kivuli', or 'Horns of shadow.' These spires and the surrounding lands were reviled not only for their evil appearance, but also for the sizable hyena clan that made its home in the valley between the spires. The hyenas dominated this valley, chasing out any other predators that attempted to make territories in their lands, and keeping the area shrouded in secret. They took pride in keeping the true fertility of the valley a secret, taking marvelous care of the bounty of animals that truly did live in the Pembe Kivuli lands, enjoying the poor reputation that the land had. The worse the reputation, the less apex predators came to challenge the hyenas and their leadership. For many decades, the cackling animals defended their land and kept it in great harmony.

Until a lion named Waovu caught wind of the secret.

A wicked lion with black eyes and cream fur desired the Pembe Kivuli lands for himself. Waovu was not a strong lion, but he had an insane gleam in his eye and ambition glittering in every tooth. He ruled a small pride of equally viscous but weak lionesses at his every command, and together they hatched a dirty plan to force the hyenas out of their homeland. Together, they sneaked through the valley, until they had reached its inmost wall. A single river runs through the Pembe Kivuli valley, keeping all the vegetation quenched, and their plan was to choke the river. Using their combined strength, the pride pushed boulders into place over the mouth of the river, blocking the flow of the water. Then, before the hyenas could come to find what had happened, the dastardly pride had fled back to the entrance of the valley and waited for phase two to take place.

Unable to fix the blockage, the hyenas watched their lands wither and die, and they knew something was unnatural because they had begun to smell lion around the territory outside the valley. As the prey animals began to leave, the hyenas grew ever weaker, and members began to disappear. The lions had begun to pick off clan members one by one, and the numbers of the great clan had begun to dwindle. Months rolled by, and the remaining hyenas were forced to surrender to the lions... but Waovu was not about to let the 'filthy animals' walk free. He slaughtered much of the weakened clan, murdering their weakened elderly and their starving cubs, leaving the bodies scattered across the land. He allowed only a few to live, 'mercifully' allowing them to leave their home in the paws of the lions. After he had banished the hyenas, Waovu admired the work he had done on the lands, with dead grass and bloody bodies scattered as far as his eyes could see. He grinned, and announced to his pride, "This land is wet with my evil!" For a few years after that day, the land was ruled by the Mvua na Maovu pride.

Waovu's reign was short but cruel, as the land was not able to take his reckless love of desolation. His pride loved the taste of young animals and freshly killed females, and not knowing how to properly run a territory meant that the populations of the wild animals couldn't keep up. They took more than they needed of important prey animals, and the lands were soon overgrown with skeletons and vegetation that animals were not around to eat.

After the death of his firstborn son to the infertility of the land, The young king decided that he needed advisers to help him rule the land. He purchased two lions, an elderly female with an exotic name, Aurora, and a young male to be his heir.
