Isiphepho's Den

The picturesque sight of open grasslands and the shade of acacias is a welcome vision during your exploration into this kingdom. There are almost no cheetahs, leopards or African wild dogs here, but every breath of air is tinged with lion; the resident elephant herd is busy foraging and splashing at the widest river, while herds of zebra, wildebeest and gazelles of several kinds all make their own trek through the land. They all somehow know you're not of this pride, but they don't try to expel you; that task alone is only reserved for the resident male, further ahead.

You pick up his scent marks and scratches in trees, revealing the invisible path. In this part of Tanzania, there are other prides competing with this one, those that are inbred and diseased, jealous of their neighbors that had moved in from elsewhere. It points to a scattering of rock caves and flattened kopjes, perfect for a pride to perch upon; as if they had been expecting you, the closer you get, the more heads you see appearing over the stones, eyes of different colors judging you for what you bring and what you want.

But the first and biggest lion to arrive was the king himself, a stunning, ferocious spotted primal with a black mane. He's bigger than three common males! Striding with narrowed eyes and all the contained power of a growing storm, he bares his fangs and snarls with head held high, almost like he expects you to suddenly bow down, as if you're a new subject for him to order about. But even if you don't do that, he doesn't hold back the confidence in his eyes, the subtle warning in his voice.

"Visitor," he calls in a voice like a sudden thunderclap. "A smell on the wind told us you were coming. I see you had no trouble. But take heed: we are the mightiest felines you will see in this part of the kingdom. I cannot speak for others, but I will allow you to trade and breed, to drink and feast and sleep with us, if that is what you wish. All I ask for in return is consideration...and perhaps a mutual partnership. One day, before I'm gone, I'd like to leave my mark on this kingdom. You are welcome to stay and see it."
