the chernobyl disaster of april 26th, 1986 is the largest nuclear disaster in history. the result of a failed safety test, it released radiation all across europe, especially in ukraine and belarus. in the aftermath, an area of evacuation was established, over 2,600 km in size. it displaced over 300,000 people living in the area, known as the chernobyl exclusion zone. these people were told the evacuation was temporary. it was not. to this day, it is considered dangerous to return.

the official death count of the soviet union was 31: the firefighters and nuclear powerplant workers who died of acute radiation sickness in the following weeks and months. this number does not account for the other power plant workers involved in the direct aftermath, the people living in the nearby towns of pripyat and kiev, or even the hundreds of miners and hundreds of thousands of liquidators who spent months trying to contain as much radiation as possible. these people, even today, have a higher likelihood of developing radiation-related diseases, including but not limited to cancer. the death toll is likely in the thousands.

elmæri stands before a forest fire in the chernobyl exclusion zone, his fur patchy and singed in some spots from getting too close to the flames. these fires not only destroyed vegetation and killed wildlife, but stirred up radioactive material that had been sitting dormant in the environment. you shouldn't stick around here for much longer.
