The First King - Prologue Excerpt
The air was hot on Chi'aki's back, his fur drenched in sweat and each of his limbs aching with fire. The sky was black, without a moon or stars. Chi'aki had been walking for nearly three months without stopping, fearful that the tyrannical king of his former pride would still be tracking his pawprints. The most food he'd eaten in days was a small flightless bird. The only water he'd gotten to drink was from a rare sprinkle of rain. His skin clung to his bones, his muscles raw and his bones frail. He hardly looked like a lion.
The chuckle of a striped hyena alerted him, yet he was too exhausted to seek out the scavenger. He reeked of weakness and death. He almost wanted to lay down and let the vultures take him. His forelegs trembled under him as he panted, his eyes closed, only following what was little left of his intuition to find whatever it was he was looking for, until he suddenly rammed into a firm body of warm, soft fur. His eyes opened, and he looked up to see a large towering male tigon, eyes shining bright, his coat shimmering like it was set in the dust of the sun itself.

"I am Sopdu," the tigon greeted. "I am The Sun. You, lion, look weak... How long have you been traveling?"
Chi'aki couldn't answer. Another figure stepped out from behind Sopdu, a regal looking female leopon who smelt of the air just before it rained.

"Brother, please be more mindful of your words... I apologize, lion, on his behalf. I am Asase Yaa. I am The Earth. Do you need assistance?"

"The Sun..? The Earth?" Chi'aki echoed, his eyes glancing between the two strange beings. "I... I've been walking for months.. yes.. I do need help, please.."

"Of course you need help. You're barely skin and bone." Sopdu crooned.

"And we'd be happy to assist," Added Asase Yaa.

"Though, we'd need something from you in return." Finished Sopdu.

"I'm sorry... I don't have anything to give." Chi'aki shook his head, his voice creaky and shallow. The two beings looked at one another, before answering in tandem.

"Help us find our sibling."

"...Your sibling..?"

"Yes! Ayyur, The Moon. Their disappearance has caused life has abandoned this place... Without their light, and without them guiding the ocean, there's nothing here for animal nor plant." Asase Yaa explained, her brother nodding along. "Help us find them, and in exchange, we will help you with anything you need."
Chi'aki thought for a moment, his stomach growling with a burning ache...
"Alright.. I'll help you."

Story notes:
>Chi'aki, a young lion, is exiled from his pride. He is chased far away from his home land, into a dark, dry desert. There is nothing but sand for millions of miles. Even the sky seemed barren.
>Chi'aki wondered the land for thirteen weeks, following nothing but the wind, for the sky was black and without stars. On the last day of the thirteens week, he was approached by two lionoid spirits, Sopdu and Asase Yaa, a spirit of The Sun, and a spirit of The Earth.
>The spirits explained that they were searching for their missing sister, Ayyur, a spirit of The Moon, and that their presence was what kept the sky balanced. They ask Chi'aki to help them find them.
>Chi'aki agreed, and traveled with the spirits for many years.
>Later, Chi'aki is old and growing weak, and is loosing hope in finding Ayyur. He grows lazy and fat, and curses The Sun's childish determination.
>Chi'aki is brutally killed by The Sun spirit, who then curses the land under his rule, and that any lion who enters it's sanctity should serve under his burning rays.
>The Earth is furious with her brother's violent ways, but is unable to lift the curse. Instead, she blesses the accursed lions with protection from the heat, sprouting large, luscious trees from the dry sand, with wide green canopies that shaded the dirt.
>The clashing arcanes spun with each other, each trying to take control, until they made peace. The Sun would shine through the canopies just enough to give light to the new forest, and the heat could only reach those who disrespected Sopdu's name. The Earth would provide for the lions, and shield those who praise Asase Yaa.
>Inspired by the nature of arcane, Sopdu and Asase Yaa agreed that this land would be home to any lion that followed the pawsteps of Chi'aki, and so this pride was founded.
> . . .
> Poales takes over the pride for selfish gain, and is inept at protecting it's lionesses. He refuses to search for Ayyur, and disrespects the sun and earth spirits.
> Sopdu threatens to destroy him, but Asase Yaa keeps him from it.
> Poales is neglectful of the pride and the forest, but insists that he is the best king for the pride.
> Poales leaves the pride for days on end, returning with mounds of junk that only crowd and litter. One day during his exploration, he finds a shiny-pelted Jaglion sulking in the desert. He remembers the sun and earth spirit's descriptions of their sibling, and it matches the feline.
> Poales brings the solemn creature back to his pride, bragging loudly to the spirits that he's found their lost sibling, and he should be graced with fortune and good will for his act of bravery.
> Warily, the spirits agree, bestowing blessings upon Poales and greeting Ayyur with warmth.
> Ayyur expresses their dislike of Poales, and curses him instead, seeing through his feign. On every full moon, Poales would grow just a little bit weaker, and would never gain more strength than he had.
