The Vail of The First Light

As the sun is devoured by shadow, the lion steps into the sacred pools of water. The Vail shifts into the strange golden twilight of the Midnight Sun, and the world holds its breath; time itself slows. Around them, the landscape glows with a heavy, eerie light, and every whisper of the earth seems to fade into silence.

The surface of the pools shimmers and splits, revealing the lion’s true soul raw and unhidden. Their virtues rise like golden ripples across the water. Their sins and regrets pool like dark stains beneath the surface. Their secret hopes drift like ghostly reflections, visible for all to see. In this place, there are no lies, no masks, no mercy.

No gods, no spirits  only the cold, ancient gaze of the Eclipse itself watches. If the heart is pure, or humble enough to admit its broken pieces, a hidden beam of sunlight pierces the darkness. It touches the lion’s chest with burning warmth, blessing them, strengthening their soul, and clearing the path that lies ahead.

But if the heart is poisoned  filled with denial, hatred, fear, or corruption  the pools blacken. Shadows rise from the waters and the earth, coiling like living smoke. The light of the Midnight Sun collapses into cold darkness, the lion’s breath grows heavy, and their spirit is pulled thin. The Eclipse makes no plea. No mercy. Only one truth remains: be blessed, or die.

Those who are blessed walk from the Vale bathed in golden fire, their steps lighter, their spirit renewed. Those who are judged unworthy collapse where they stand, their life claimed by the Eclipse, their body crumbling to dust under the returning sun, lost forever to the silent judgment of the sky.

Kahl is Piebald (Wrapped)

Kahl's Origin Story

Kahl’s birth was nothing short of extraordinary, but it was also shadowed by superstition and fear. On the day he came into the world, a rare solar eclipse darkened the skies, casting an eerie shadow over the pride, something the pride had never seen. The lions of Tiamat's pride, who revered strength, order, and tradition, saw the eclipse as a harbinger of bad fortune an omen of ill luck. They believed that the sun itself had turned against the newborn cub, marking him as cursed.

The day of the solar eclipse arrived, and the pride grew increasingly nervous, whispers of fear spreading like wildfire. The last time the eclipse came, Kahl was just a cub—weak, small, and vulnerable. But now, grown and powerful, the eclipse felt like an omen, a warning that the darkness of his birth might consume them all.

As the moon began to slowly block the sun, Tiamat summoned the pride beneath the deepening shadow. His gaze locked onto Kahl, his expression stern, cold, and unyielding. The eclipse had begun, and with it, Tiamat knew the time had come to deal with the lion who had always been a threat to the balance of his pride.

"You think the eclipse is a symbol of your strength," Tiamat's voice boomed, quiet but full of menace, "but it is nothing more than a reminder of your curse. Just as the eclipse swallows the sun, you would swallow this pride whole, taking its light and leaving only darkness in your wake.

"You may have grown strong," Tiamat continued, his voice dripping with disdain, "but that strength will not save you. I will not let you devour this pride, as the eclipse devours the sun. You will leave. And if you do not, we will make you."

Kahl felt the sting of Tiamat’s words, but he did not flinch. This was not the first time his father had rejected him. It would not be the last.

Solvaris, never one to back down from his father’s harsh judgments, stepped forward. His eyes rolled with exaggerated disdain. “Oh, please,” Solvaris drawled, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “You’ve always had a flair for the dramatic, haven’t you? Really, father, do you honestly think this whole eclipse nonsense is going to scare anyone? Kahl’s not some looming disaster. This pride’s scared of its own shadow, and you’re leading the charge. If you think this is going to make us turn tail, you’re sorely mistaken.”

His voice was dismissive, bordering on playful. "They were never prepared for our greatness brother.”

As Kahl led his pride, he took great pride in their shared belief. Once, he had been the outcast, the one feared for his birth under the eclipse. But now, as the leader of a pride that celebrated the eclipse as a symbol of growth, he stood tall. His pride had found their strength not in what they were born with, but in what they were willing to become. They did not fear the eclipse; they welcomed it, knowing it was a sign of their greatest strength and an opportunity for transformation.
