The Current Matriarch, Vervain

Pride Lore

The Barrens. A brutal, arid expanse where survival felt like a distant dream. This desolate landscape, with its sun-bleached earth, relentless winds, and sudden sharp cliffs, was often deemed a death sentence for all who wandered through it. When several young lionesses from the land to the east, known as The Haven, were banished by their pride for refusing to bow before the new king, Solace, who had brutally murdered to take over the pride, they found themselves cast out into this hellscape. Few thought they would survive.

Among them stood a fierce young lioness named Vervain. With her spirit unyielding and her head held high, Vervain declared, "This land will not be our resting place, sisters!"

"Of course it will, fluff-brain!" snarled the callous Eris, a vain lioness not much older than Vervain, who found herself in this predicament because of Vervain's previous actions. In Eris's mind, she should be ruling beside Solace to secure her dynasty. Being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time was often a pain.

"Enough of this banter," spoke Ishtar, an elderly lioness whom Solace deemed useless. She had an air of authority. "Arguing will get us nowhere. We are in this mess together, like it or not."

"However, I fail to see how we will survive, young sister," Ishtar said gently to Vervain. The few other lionesses around them nodded in agreement.

"Simple. We will survive by forming a pride of our own," Vervain replied matter-of-factly. This stunned the group of lionesses.

"A sisterhood has not existed for... well, for a long time!" a dazzling white lioness exclaimed.

"Exactly what Sylver said," nodded another elder lioness.

"It ain't natural," she added with a solemn nod of her head.

"Come now, Sarentu, let’s hear young Vervain out," Ishtar hushed.

"Yes, I for one would like to hear what she has to say. It’s not like we have any other options," a sparkling lioness said, dipping her head.

"Thank you, Ishtar and Nova," Vervain said gratefully, bowing her head as the two convinced the others to listen to her plan.

Vervain, being clever, figured that if they shared every bit of prey and water they came across while heading deeper into The Barrens, they might find something on the other side—a place her mother had spoken of when Vervain was a young cub. While lionesses like Eris scoffed and called the idea foolish, they had little choice. Thus, the newfound sisterhood pressed onward into the vast desolation.

It was hot, grueling, and painful. Each step felt like their paws were sinking into heated coals. Every breath tasted of sand, and their eyes burned as the relentless wind battered them. Yet, they pushed forward—starving and exhausted, it was all they could do. They stopped only to rest and drink from the little puddles that remained or, if it rained, to hold their heads high with dry mouths open, hoping to quench the seemingly endless thirst. When they started their journey, they boasted a proud twenty; now, only nine remained.

All seemed lost. Vervain was about to give up hope as she gazed at the bags of bones around her. They were all suffering. Maybe this place was just a cub's story after all. She contemplated lying down to let exhaustion pull her under into the tempting abyss of a never-ending dream, only to be disturbed by the deep, throaty croak of a raven. This was likely the only food they had seen in days. Quickly, she shot up to her paws and laid her eyes upon the strangest sight: a raven with feathers as white as driven snow and eyes the color of the sky.

Lost in the moment, she jumped back when Eris lunged desperately for the creature, missing by mere inches. The raven took flight, landing just a short distance away.

"You could have helped! Now we'll never catch the gods-darned thing! Vervain, are you even listening to me?" Eris snarled. However, Vervain was not paying attention. Most creatures fled from them; had they really diminished so much since beginning their journey? No, that couldn’t be it. Cautiously, she stepped forward, and the raven patiently waited, flying away again as she got too close and landing slightly farther away.

"It... it wants us to follow it," Vervain said to the others, who thought her idea absurd! They were all convinced they were going to die, deep down. Yet something inside them resisted the urge to quit. Despite their aching bodies, they pushed onward, following Vervain and the white raven deeper into the heat of The Barrens.

Suddenly, the air shifted. The dry, dusty scent they had grown accustomed to became heavy and moist, the temperature dropping as they got closer to the raven. Water! They scented water—and a lot of it! Unable to contain themselves, the sisterhood burst into a trot, feeling more energized than they had in a long time.

As they continued forth and clambered up a rocky precipice they all nearly bumped into each other when Vervain suddenly halted before them. They were all agasp. Before them sprawled within a large valley in the middle of The Barrens a forest. Rivers filtered from underground streams flowing out of the sides of the crags keeping the forest contained. The scent of prey heavy in the air. They had made it. They had made it to the faebled land they were told about in their cub days.

Eager to explore the new land beneath them, the lionesses took a quarter moon to regain their strength and learn the secrets of their new home. The white raven seemed to always follow Vervain around, and the other lionesses firmly agreed that since he had led them there, he and all the other corvids of the forest would be permanently off the menu. However, as they grew stronger, an issue arose.

"We need a king," Ishtar began, only for Nova to interrupt.

"I don't think we need one! The last thing we need is for another Solace to happen. We escaped one tyranny; we don't need to do it again," she stated curtly. Everyone nodded in agreement, except for Eris, of course. Ishtar shot Nova a stern look.

“If you would let me finish… We need a king; otherwise, our strength will weaken as you young ones age. No one will be left to help feed you. Therefore, I propose we find a male for protection and to provide heirs for our bloodlines,” she advised wisely.

"But that would mean going back out into The Barrens. Can we even risk that again?" Sylver asked gently. The lionesses all looked down at their paws. Vervain took a deep breath and stood up.

"I'll go and look for a male," she volunteered. "It was me who got us into this mess of being so far out in The Barrens, and I'll solve our problem." Her tone was firm. Sarentu simply gave a soft nod. The journey had been harsh on her, despite her not being as old as Ishtar.

"Then be careful, young one," Sarentu bid the young brown, black, and white lioness farewell. Soon enough, the others came one by one to wish her luck, all but Eris, who scoffed at the idea and turned away.

With one last look at the lionesses she had come to see as her family, Vervain left The Hidden Eden, the white raven riding along on her back to keep her company.

The heat hung heavily in the air, suffocating and unrelenting. Kaos snarled quietly to himself, his once formidable and muscular frame now gaunt from the unforgiving conditions of The Barrens. The sun wreaked havoc on his pelt, sucking the richness from his darker patches and leaving behind a washed-out hue. The thought of the stubborn dirt clinging to his fur made him shudder; scrubbing it away would take ages. If it hadn’t been for that insufferable male who cheated him in battle, Kaos would have risen to take command of the pride, forging an army of lionesses who would swoon at his magnificence. Instead, he found himself not only defeated but utterly lost, wandering aimlessly through the desolate landscape with no clear path to escape. That was until his angel appeared to rescue him.

Her pelt was a mesmerizing tapestry of mottled black and brown, accentuated by bold white patches that seemed to sparkle in the harsh sunlight. Her eyes, vibrant and pink like freshly bloomed roses, drew him in, while the white crow emblazoned across her back spread its wings gracefully, lending her an otherworldly aura.

“Did it hurt when you fell from heaven, darling? Or am I already dead, and you’ve come to welcome me?” Kaos purred, his smirk a blend of charm and mischief.

Vervain felt her cheeks flush at his audacious words as a smile tugged at her lips. “More like I’ve come to save you... if you’re willing to be saved, that is…” she replied softly, her voice as smooth as silk.

Kaos tilted his head, a low chuckle escaping his throat, rich with humor. “Well, you seem to know where water is... so I’d definitely like to be saved, just this once.” He grinned as she beckoned him to follow, leading him deeper into The Barrens. Unfortunately, much to his chagrin, he was strictly forbidden from feasting on the bird.

As they journeyed back, Vervain recounted the story of her sisterhood's exile, painting a vivid picture of their struggles. She explained how they were willing to extend an invitation for him to join their pride. He would be king in name only, devoid of true power or the ability to make decisions. Kaos, as he soon discovered, was rather… vain. Yet, the promise of an entourage of adoring lionesses and a territory unlike any he had ever ruled before was enough to entice him. He found himself more than willing to accept this unconventional partnership, ready to stand alongside her as they forged a new future together in what would become known as, The Edenborn Pride.
