Popoki Fox Lore

The Popoki Foxes are an "alien" species from an unknown origin. Years ago on the Hawaiian Island of Lanai, an asteroid struck leaving a massive hole in the ground.. or that is the theory. Few locals remember the stories that were passed on by their elders... some don't even believe the stories at all. The best we were able to get was this: Inside the theoretical asteroid was a small group of a strange furry creatures. It's possible they were placed there by someone but what ever the reason, they emerged and learned how to thrive on the ocean cliff sides of Lanai. Years passed as the Popoki Foxes remained un-noticed, too few in numbers to be much of any trouble.

Now in recent times, Hawaiian locals found these cat-foxes and affectionately named them Pōpoki - “pōh-poh-kee” Foxes, meaning "Cat" foxes to describe these often stripey curious animals.

No longer will you only find Popoki Foxes in Hawaii but also all over the globe!

Appearance

Popoki Foxes (PF) come in a wide range of colors from greys, and blues to bright orange and cream. They look similar to domestic cats in the aspect of pelt looks and markings though there is a little bit of a wider range of colors. Generally all PF have some sort of white on the body if even a little, though solid white tends to be rare as is having a total absence of white.

Fur texture seems to be closer to fox fur being long and soft with a thick undercoat. The PF is also sized similar to a north american red fox. PF have three places on the body of fluffier fur than the rest of its pelt. These places are the rims of the ears, the mane, known as the collar, (which is present on the PF around the neck that continues to the lower half of the chest) and finally the long plush tail as well.

Health/Reproduction/Partners

The popoki fox is generally a fit animal who has few genetic health defects, Though on occasion mutations do occur. Mutations can be anything from hair loss to coloring defects and even missing limbs. This usually happens while in development, and can result in the death of a kit. Since the PF is usually lacking heart conditions or other issues, this species has a life span of 20-30 years making it an excellent candidate for a companion or service animal.

The wild PF reproduces only once or twice in it's life time, and does not seem to be monogamous with sexual partners when exposed to multiple PF of the opposite gender. It appears in this species needing care for many offspring isn't necessary since the success rate of raising a kit to adulthood is extremely high. Most litters consist of 2-3 offspring. For a PF to have four in a litter is quite rare, only happening in about 1 out of every 25 births. After breeding the male and female will separate and return to their own "partners" (this term is later to be explained). Only the female's pair-bond will care for the resulting kits.

PF DO choose a lifelong "partner" of the same species but the PF's companion is not limited to gender, age, or previous breeding experiences. PF partners are a non sexual pair bond who care for each others offspring and support each other. It has never been documented that PF partners breed with each other, plus a reason for this is often times this pair bond is either related or same-sex.

Temperament

Popoki foxes are quite friendly when raised with humans from birth. Feral PF can become tamed over time but tend to be unpredictable. With the right training a popoki can be a well behaved pet or companion. With other Popoki or in tribes these foxes tend to have an aggressive streak though it usually isn't too severe.

Hierarchy among other Popoki

All popoki seek to create a life long partner with another of it's kind, and generally both PF in the pair bond share the same social status as the other. When in groups of 3 Pair bonds or more interact on a regular basis, a social hierarchy is created where one partnership dominates the others. These groups are called "packs". In these packs it is often observed that one or both of the dominant pair bond has adornments of objects on it's body to visually show this higher status. If the dominant pair bond involves a male, it is common for him to restrict other males from breeding within the pack. Often times the dominant or alpha pair will attack the ones socially below it if they strike out or attempt to leave. Wild paired popoki who live in a pack with others tend to live longer then singular paired popoki since there is a better chance at catching a meal in a group along with being able to chase of threats together.

Intelligence

Even after years of research the popoki fox still finds way to surprise us with it's intelligence. It has been shown that a PF is self aware, able to create or use tools to relieve boredom or to use for better access to hard to reach foods, is able to solve fairly complex puzzles, and has a excellent memory of faces and scents. Studies have shown that a popoki fox can actually empathize with fellow PF.

All of these skills and traits of a PF are extremely fascinating but one of the most interesting of skills is that the PF is one of the only documented species (other than maybe the bearded vulture) who decorate themselves for a higher social status. A PF higher on the hierarchy sale will adorn it's self with bones, fur from other animals or colorful feathers. Some have even been seen using human garbage to decorate their body. It does not seem to have any other use other than social purposes.

Diet

The popoki fox is an opportunistic omnivore, eating what is available to them. They love to eat roots, fallen or rotting fruit, berries, larvae, insects, vermin, fish, eggs, human garbage, and scavenged carcasses.

Alongside Humans

The popoki fox is easily trained and has many jobs in the human world. Some have been trained easily to be a service fox, some are even used in the police force or military to sniff out drugs or bombs. The most common job for a popoki fox is a vermin catcher because they are excellent at hunting small prey who might invade barns or other areas. It has become a common practice in recent years for the PF to take the place of domestic cats on a farm to keep the mouse/rat population low.

It is recommended to own 2 or more PF at a time in an even number since they are highly social creatures and love to create pair bonds though as long as a PF is kept from boredom or loneliness by it's owner it is acceptable to only own one.

So you're interested in breeding your Popoki together are you? There's a few things you need to know before we start talking about new little kits. Please read the rules before we go any further

Popoki Fox Breeding Rules

•You MUST fully understand all rules on the thread including these ones before filling out a breeding form. •Payment for breeding must be sent directly before or after the form is posted. •The form and payment must always be posted/sent by the owner of the female Popoki. •You must already own two Popoki. This can include the female you are breeding. The owner of the male does not have to already have two popoki themselves. (customs are not included in your total number of popoki). •If you are breeding your female Popoki to a friend's male the other member involved must copy and paste the breeding form as well and post it at the same time while also giving their consent some where in the post. •Female Popoki can only ever have three litters total. •Male Popoki can sire an unlimited amount of litters. •Custom Popoki can never be bred. •you can not choose what your bred Popoki will look like or what gender they will be. Markings and other will be inherited by using random.org. •After your Popoki have been successfully bred you must wait up to 3-5 days for the kits to arrive (though they can come sooner). •The Member who owns the mother Popoki gets first pick of the litter and the extra kit if it's an odd litter. (Unless it has been pre-determined otherwise) •Litter size rarity 2: most common 3: Uncommon 4: Rare
