I thought I'd seen this suggested before, but I haven't been able to find any topics relating to this suggestion, so I figured I'd post it myself. If there are any other topics, feel free to notify me.

Edit: I misread the news post. The schedule is as follows:
1 month: reminder email
3 months: reminder email
6 months: reminder email
9 months: email warning that player could lose lion name
12 months: emails will stop, however lion name has been lost.
Lioden accounts cannot be deleted.

Anyways, for those who aren't aware or whom may have forgotten, there was a feature just recently added (news post) for inactive accounts to be stripped of their lion's name after 6 months, and inactive accounts deleted after a year's time. While I support this, a concern of mine was that, for those who may leave for long periods of time, they could come back to their lion's name having been taken away, or their account deleted altogether. While I understand this is a rare occurrence in and of itself, I've had this happen to me on other SIM games, and I can talk from personal experience when I say that coming back off of hiatus to a nonexistent account is frustrating at best, especially if you've spent real money on it. So, as a solution, I came up with the idea of a hiatus button. Basically, the button would serve as a marker for your account, informing others that you are inactive but due to return at some point in the future, as well as preventing accounts still in use from getting deleted. The button could be located under details, and appear next to your profile name in your den, either as an icon, color-coded marker similar to the online/offline marker, or the word HIATUS next to the player name.

Now, one of my own issues with adding a hiatus button is the potential abuse of this feature. My concern is that, if someone were to mark their account as "on hiatus", then leave LD for whatever reason, their account would stay forever marked as "on hiatus" and would be immune to inactivity checks and deletion. While this isn't really a big problem (aside from cluttering up the site with inactive accounts and misleading other players about your activity status), whatever name they used for their king is now locked to their account. To me, this is a big problem, since lion names have to be unique. My first suggestion would be to add a feature to override the hiatus button after a significant amount of time (and either free up the lion name or delete the account), when it becomes clear that the owner of the account will not be returning. My second idea is to altogether remove the requirement to have unique king names, since we still have our ID's and player names to discern us.

Anyone else with a better suggestion is free to voice their opinion. If you do/don't support, I'd appreciate it if you left a message as to why, so I can possibly improve upon this idea.

No point to a hiatus button - Fledgling (#25392)
I feel like there's no point to a hiatus button if they're going to "override" it and give away your name anyways. Plus, I don't think it's uncommon for people to take unplanned breaks, so this suggestion wouldn't buy them any time anyways.

This suggestion has 65 supports and 3 NO supports.

Support! I have a tendency to leave games sometimes for periods of time and like you I have lost stuff when I returned and was horrified,I had to buy credits to get all my stuff back, contacted the admin and was basically told it wasn't their problem! So needless to say I refuse to buy anything further from the site.. this would be a great idea!!

Support! I recently came back from an eight(?) month hiatus that I took to focus on school more. I would hate it if I came back to Lioden and had everything taken away! I know Howrse deletes accounts, which is why I don't play it anymore. Sometimes I just want a break to focus on other things without having to worry!

Wait, deleting inactive accounts? I think you may have misread that news post. My understanding is that they will take away your king's name after a certain period of inactivity, but the rest of your account is safe.

Whoops, yeah, I must have misread the news post. However, I still think it has potential. I understand unplanned hiatuses aren't an everyday thing, but there really isn't any way to take a "planned" break with the current game features. And, even if long breaks aren't common, they still happen. In my opinion, the hiatus button is a simple way to say "I still use this account, I just can't log on right now."

Regardless, thank you for your input. :)

Newspost says;
"The 9 month email will notify members that they will lose their lion name if they don't log in within the next 3 months. The 12 month email will notify them that we will stop emailing them, but also that they have lost their lion name - though they are still welcome to come back at any point and set a new name."

Accounts aren't deleted at all, just lion names are reset.
It wouldn't be devastating for that to happen, since the next time you log on, you can just pick a new one.
It also does a world of good, considering how a ton of players haven't been active since 2013-2015, but still take up lion names that others might want, ones that they aren't using and likely don't care about at all.

While some players may find themselves in situations where they cannot log on for a year or more, it isn't a common one, and I think it's very fair to wait a whole year before simply removing the main lion's name.
There's the possibility that the name will still be open when the player returns, and if not, main lion names aren't a huge deal. It's not so hard to just pick a new one.

In addition to people exploiting the option, I think it's also possible that people would put their account on hiatus, and then eventually just forget entirely about the game, or not care enough to get back to it when they did have the opportunity.
If they lose interest, but their account is untouchable, then that lion name has been taken out of circulation permanently.

Were there an override to the hiatus, and assuming a leave was planned, I can see how it would be convenient to have a hiatus button. That way your time gets extended a bit, but the name can eventually still be released.
However, if you knew that you were leaving, you could always shoot off a quick message to an admin or a mod saying that you needed to be gone for x amount of time, for whatever reason, but wanted to keep the name. Staff is really understanding, so it might be possible to get a bit of an extension, since the leave was due to x circumstance, not due to your negligence of the account.
This isn't a guarantee, ofc, since I can't speak for them, but I think it's a bit much to create a new feature that is only helpful to a very small demographic, it would probably be more convenient for a member of staff to just handle the hiatus requests, and keep track of which accounts to leave alone for how long.

tl;dr: I don't think a lot of people leave for a year on purpose, so I don't see this feature having a lot of purpose. Might be better to contact staff if you're in a situation where you're gonna be gone but want the name, rather than having a new feature implemented.

I am aware that I misread the newspost. At the moment, I didn't have time to restructure my post, so I put a quick edit message at the top of the page to clarify in the meantime.

I understand your point in saying it's not that common for people to leave for long periods of time. However, it still happens. And, yeah, your king's name is just a name when it comes down to it; nevertheless, it's still frustrating having to cycle through 10, maybe 20 names before you find something unique, without adding numbers/symbols/extra letters, etc. After the work it can take to get it, I wouldn't want to lose my king's name if I took a planned/unplanned break.

I do personally like the override idea, as it provides an extended (rather than infinite) amount of time whilst tackling the problem of possible abuse of the feature. As with your idea of contacting staff: A few months back, I nearly ran into the issue of having to leave for a couple of months. I was aware that I would be gone, but it was on such short notice that I wouldn't have had the opportunity to message a mod/admin and wait for a reply. In that case, I believe the "quick click" of the hiatus button could come in handy.

The cons do outweigh the pros in respect to how many players the hiatus button could help, and I understand the point you make with taking the time to implementing an entirely new feature when it could very well only help a select few, rather that a more preferable majority of Lioden players. If the staff does reject this suggestion, I think perhaps assigning a staff member(s) to deal with hiatus-related issues could count as a good replacement for the button.

Thank you for your input :)

I don't support the feature, but only in the way it's currently written:

I think that giving players a full calendar year to decide whether or not they want to stay is generous enough--I don't think an override would be necessary. If you don't have enough attachment to the game to log in and do the minimum once, thereby completely resetting your hiatus clock and granting you another full year to make your decision--then I think it's safe to say you're done.

I think an appeals process is also unnecessary--adds to the helpers' workload and further divides their time. You lose it, good news bad news--the bad news is, you've lost your name, good news is, you get a free name change! No GB for you!

What I WOULD support is a hiatus button that automatically resets your King's stud fee to 0 and hides you from the Search results, so your lion doesn't show up as a potential stud. Nothing more disappointing than finding a king with my ideal markings, sending the request, and then seeing that the user hasn't logged on in months.

I have to support Kristen's idea here.... I got back july 1st after a 6 month long much needed Hiatus... (not fully sure yet if im 100% back yet or not for that matter) but giving a year to people is more then enough time to decide if their name is worth it or not ^^
